Rebuilt the transmission
at 136, 000 miles.2. I just
replaced the timing chain
. This is a crucial and expensive piece of work that needs to be done to these vans. I had it done recently, like 600 miles ago recently. It's brand new. It cost $6000 to do this, it's a big and crucial job.3. While the timing chain was being replaced, I had the
transmission fully serviced
.
This is a
strong van and I would have zero doubts
driving it on a long trip.
There are some cosmetic things that I would have done if I were to keep it. I would probably get it repainted and have the windows re-tinted...but that's about it.
That being said, there are some in and out that could be fixed to make this van perfect. For example, the clear coating on the hood is mostly gone and there are some spots around the van where the clear coating could be patched...but hey, it's a sixteen year old Volkswagen van.
Mechanically the van is strong. . could use some cosmetic touch up.
I will miss this van. I raised my kids in this van and have many fond memories in this van. it's part of out family. I'm actually very reluctant to sell. These are classic and fun.
They stopped making them in the US in 2003..and people want them. I want it. But, I need a truck that has 4x4 and can tow.
Yes, there are similar vans on Ebay, for similar prices...but have they had the critical mechanical work done like the transmission and timing chain ($10, 000 value) done? No.
