The Roaring Twenties was a time of unheard of prosperity for America. Jobs were plentiful, business was good, and America’s car companies were building some of the finest and most opulent cars ever seen. These were the heady times of custom coach builders and great names like Peerless, Pierce Arrow, Marmon, Stutz, and Duesenberg. At the forefront of these great names was Packard, a car that had come to be trusted by society’s best. Indeed, a Packard could always be found in the livery of the Vanderbilt’s, Roosevelt’s, or the Astors. Whether it was a grand town car or a sleek roadster, Packard had a car for any occasion.
Offered from the very heart of this golden era is this stunning 1927 Super Eight Sport Touring finished in a lovely two-tone green. This opulent motorcar is beautifully detailed from its accessory luggage trunk to its Goddess of Speed hood ornament. Riding on an immense 143-inch wheelbase with Packard’s disc wheels, this is a car that announces its arrival in grand fashion. A two-tone black and green finish highlights all of the fine attributes of this car while the huge Packard grille with accessory stone guard and drum headlamps gives it a commanding appearance. Although styling for 1927 was largely carried over from 1926, engineering changes made Packard’s engines one of the fastest on the road at the time. A new eight-cylinder engine received a larger bore and stroke while a new “Turbo-Head” design combined with aluminum pistons and a new intake manifold meant that Packard’s eight cylinder engine now had a horsepower rating of 109. The engine compartment on this Sport Touring is nicely detailed with all components properly sorted. The interior features comfortable seating for five passengers in black leather and the rear seat still retains its original factory leather covering. A rear Tonneau windscreen also makes riding a pleasure for passengers and this is also a grand Packard that looks great with the top up or down. Simply put, when James Ward Packard uttered those famous words, “Ask the Man who owns one, ” he could have very well been talking about this fine Sport Touring in all its glory.
The days of arriving to a societal event in high fashion may be somewhat limited in the present day, but this Packard Super Eight represents a time when movie stars arrived at the red carpet with class and elegance. This Packard is a gorgeous car that can sit as the centerpiece of any collection of fine motorcars
