! ! ! !, NO RESERVE ! ! ! ! , BID TO WIN ! ! ! ! HIGH BIDDER OWNS THE BUS
Here is my 1948 White (super power) bus . this was a special production order , 'touring bus '. The Gentleman I got it from gave me the history he had on the bus. He said it was used in the late 40s into the 50s , to haul children of the employees , of Glacier National Park . The workers had housing on the Park land , and the kids were hauled to incorporated cities , nearby. (West Glacier, Browning, and maybe as far as Columbia Falls , Montana ) There were probably many other tours , trips , that the bus could have been used for .
I would guess that the bus was probably parked in the late 50s or early 60s , due to the fact that I got a reciept for the sale of the bus , by General Services Administration , Bureau of Indian Affairs , dated 2-26-1964 , where the rig sold , at auction , for $377.50 . I paid considerably more for the bus.
The Bus had been stripped of the passenger hauling seats , and made into living quarters . As the previous owner , parked the bus on land near the NorthEast entrance of Yellowstone Park , at Cooke City . There , he worked R and D for a large snow machine company , he hopped up the snow machines , fine tuned them , and some of his ideas and processes went into production .
He told me of having to shovel down to the door and steps of the bus , just to climb the steps to climb the entry steps to the bus . There were many winters spent in the bus . Cooke City gets huge amounts of snow , and he said there were many winters when all that could be seen of the bus , was just the stovepipe coming through the roof , going to the woodstove that is still inside the bus . there is also a bed in the rear of the bus , and a cook stove on the other side of the long tube , that is the interior of the bus .
Here are some details on the bus . It is a 1948 White , touring bus , according to White afficianados it was a special order , on a WB28 chassis . it was a 42 passenger configuration . It is powered by a huge inline , most likely a 451 cube 260 series . flathead six cylinder , gasoline engine . the carb is governed , there is a tiny crack in the rear of the exhaust manifold , I did not notice any exhaust smell when I drove it , and it just has a small hiss when you hold your hand over it , with the hood open . I have reached 65 MPH , but at 55 - 60 it is a very nice cruiser . The first time I drove it home , (only 5 miles) it rode like a lumber wagon . It was parked for , maybe 20 years , and , even though the tires are in good shape , and still inflated , there were flat spots on them , (from being parked) and going around corners only put the flat spots in different areas , and nearly rattled the fillings out of my teeth . After bringing the bus home , and cleaning it up a bit , doing a tuneup , and filters, I took it on a 50 mile trip . It probably took 20 of those miles for the tires to get round again . It rode nice after that . It has a 5 speed tranny , with only a single speed rearend . The roof has many dents , from so many years of heavy winters . and would be best to just have new sheeting layed over it , Or , it has a beautiful , rat rod patina . Many people with shiny hot rods , say how many hundreds of hours they have into their paint jobs . Well, it took 69 years to get this bus to look like this .
The bus has air brakes , that are ready to go in a very short time , after startup. you don't have to wait 15 minutes for the system to air up . and the brakes work well , so , unlike other vehicles , that have to have the brake system bled of the air in the system , this is ready to go in a matter of minutes ,
There are a lot of cracked panes of glass , but, it is all flat glass , so easily replaceable . . and there are other dings on the outer body , there are some lights missing off the roof pods , and a few other things . I can't remember which gauges work . but , it is not rusty , except a small amount on the right rear corner and some surface . . this is already a very cool rig , It could be made into an awesome motor home , or be a one of a kind swap meet hauler . No Motel rooms needed . there is a large box that has seen better days that housed a generator , and was also storage . I can cut that off if the buyer does not want it , this would also shorten the load by probably 5 feet . This could easily be used to haul all of your treasures , and start conversations wherever you stop , OR restore it to the grace it had back in the late 40s .
THIS BUS IS A FEATURE ARTICLE ON ROD AUTHORITY MAGAZINE ONLINE NOW , THIS MONTH . the article tells more history . Thanx for lookin' in Joe's Garage .
