Price: US $8,800.00
I am offering my original survivor 1960 Austin Healy leaf green “bugeye” Sprite VIN AN 5L / 18408 and engine 9C-U-H 18133 for sale . I purchased it from the niece of the original owner. I have a hand written log of service, fuel use and oil changes that dates from the day of purchase 10/24/59. The last entry was 8/11/83 when it had 43, 801 miles. Currently it has around 44, 435 original miles. His niece put 360 miles on the car and I added 240 miles. I have owned the car for 5 years and have driven it very little. I have other interests and I’m reluctantly selling it. I do have a British Heritage certificate that confirms the body, chassis and engine numbers.
The number on the right door hinge post is BAE 17375. The left number is AN 517236.
Body
I am not an expert so I have taken many photos. There has been no crash damage. The paintwork is original but dull and oxidized. There are several scratches and chips. There is a dent/scratch on the driver door. The panel gaps are consistent with the factory standards. The panels are straight and flat with the exception of the rear deck. Someone has likely sat on it creating a soft dent that was pushed out. The floors and rockers are original. There is no significant rust. The typical superficial rust is present. There are no bubbles or perforations. It has a used serviceable top that fits well. It also has yellowed original side curtains. The top frame is original. There is a vintage tonneau with a broken zipper. It has Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that are near new. The windshield is clear and has been replaced at some time. It is not cracked.
Drivetrain
The engine is the original 948cc. It starts easily and does not smoke. It is a very nice driver. Oil pressure is excellent and above 50#. There are no abnormal noises and no significant oil leaks. The transmission is the original and has not been rebuilt. It shifts smoothly and does not pop out of gear. These gear boxes are not synchronized in first. The rear end is quiet. It has a new brake/clutch master cylinder. The brake pedal is soft so it’s due for bleeding. The drums and shoes are near new. The steering is tight and original. It has the original Dunlop Gold Seal spare. It still has Lucas period headlamps. The gas tank was replaced by the previous owner.
Interior
The interior is original as seen in the photos. It was a barn find so it does have rodent damage as seen. They did not damage the seats. The gauges with the exception of the gas gauge work as well as lights, horn and turn signals. Extra gauges were added as seen. There is a vacuum, oil temp and ammeter . They are all vintage Smith Warner. The turn signal with was moved so the right hand could be kept on the steering wheel when signaling. It has the original tool bag that is in good condition.
General
This is a low mileage bugeye. It has the original leaf green paint that has not been touched up. It is ready to be driven and enjoyed. There aren’t many original bugeyes that remain. Hopefully the new owner will appreciate the originality and not restore it.
Other projects dictate sale. I am not an expert so ask questions.
Terms of the sale
