1967 Shelby GT350 (67200F5A01601)

I’ve owned this investment grade piece of Shelby history since January, 2000. #1601’s heritage is documented in the Shelby American Auto Club (SAAC) Registry as well as by its Marti Report. During my ownership the engine and suspension have been rebuilt to original specs except for the upper A-Arms being lowered about an inch (utilizing the template Shelby used on the 65s), the addition of a Monte Carlo bar and some extra umph from the HiPo 289 engine via a roller mechanical cam and Roush 351 Windsor heads (the engine was built by Chet Wilson and is original in appearance). Before I bought #1601 the paint had been changed from Dark Moss Green to Acapulco Blue, the Ford shifter had been replaced with a Hurst and the oil pan had been replaced with a finned aluminum 7.5 qt T-pan (as the ‘65/’66 GT350 had). The car also has a Traction-Lok rear end; a dealer installed option. Otherwise this beauty is as Shelby originally produced it, including a couple examples of the ‘67’s notoriously poor, but relatively minor, Shelby fiberglass piece fit from the factory, and it rides and drives like Shelby meant it to. While adding nothing to #1601s originality, Carroll Shelby signed the passenger side sun visor at an event in Dallas. Finally, it was featured in the September, 1990 Car Craft magazine on p75.
#1601’s Shelby American VIN (on the Shelby tag) decodes as follows - a 1967 Dark Moss Green Fastback with a 289 HiPo engine w/Shelby modifications, 4-speed manual transmission, no A/C or thermofactor, black interior and that it was the 1, 601st Shelby Mustang built in 1967 (of a total of 3, 225 ’67 GT350s & GT500s built). It is one of 1, 175 ’67 GT350s built
(the remaining 2, 050 ’67 Shelby Mustangs were GT500s). The corresponding Ford VIN begins with 7R02K (signifying the base Mustang is a fastback produced at Ford’s San Jose plant with a 289 HiPo engine). The full Ford VIN (stamped on the inner fender panel) has been verified from Shelby American factory records to be the matching Ford VIN for #1601 by Dave Matthews, the Registrar of 1967 Shelbys for SAAC.
At the base of all ’67 Shelby’s were specially built Mustangs which were assembled at Ford’s San Jose plant and shipped, semi-complete (without nose, hood & trunk lid), to the Shelby American plant at the Los Angeles airport. The Marti Report shows that #1601’s Mustang base is a K-Code Mustang produced at Ford’s San Jose plant on 03/21/67. The SAAC Registry states that #1601 was then completed at the Shelby’s Los Angeles facility on 04/14/67, shipped to the Bob MacFord dealership in Newport, KY on 05/03/67, sold to its original owner on 05/29/67 and had three additional owners before my purchase in 2000. From Shelby factory records the Registry also confirms its black interior, center mount high beams, unlouvered hood, 10-spoke Shelby wheels, no-A/C and functional rear brake scoops. Additional documentation includes notes of a previous owner and my file of purchase documents (including bill of sale, copy of previous title) and parts documentation/invoices.
