When the Jaguar “E-Type” was unveiled at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, people knew that it was a sensation. People knew that it was pretty; people knew that it was fast; people may not have known, however, that it was a revolution in automotive history… that it would change the way the world looked at cars for decades to come.
The XK-E was released as the ubiquitous roadster and coupe that we have come to know and love. But it was versatile, and it changed gradually over the years (14!) to suit different market needs and fill in the gaps between a GT car and a more refined four-seater.
The 2+2 was that four-seater. Based on the coupe, the basic dimensions were adjusted slightly: the car was stretched by 9” and the roofline went up. But with a few small changes, a multitude of benefits were realized. Of course, the car now featured room for two behind the driver/passenger seats, but these could be folded away making for a rather enormous luggage space. The extra length also added room below for a newly offered 3-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission. Coupled with the torque of the 4.2L inline-six, the car was still competitive and offered a simpler driving experience.
The car shown here is a remarkable example of what the 2+2 was when it was introduced. Almost completely original throughout, the car drives as though it was nearly new. The automatic transmission, power steering and air conditioning – all factory original – make this car stand out against the crowd as the height of the 2+2’s creature comforts are realized in a timelessly classic design.
The value in these extremely well maintained originals cannot be overstated for the true enthusiast! The engine bay is clean and still shows the Coventry workmanship in many excitingly original features – most of the finishes are still original, and items such as the washer bottle straps are still intact.
Above the bonnet, the body is remarkable. This two-owner car has never been known to have any corrosion. The body was repainted in the original Pale Primrose hue and the chrome is in very good condition for the car’s age. Upon opening the doors, one will note a surprising lack of defect due to age: there are no tears in the seats or headliner and the dash is crack-free. Even the original jack and books accompany this 61, 000 original mile and numbers matching car!
