Up for auction is my 1971 Datsun 240z, built in August of
1970, VIN # 8011, and purchased by the original owner on September 30th
1970 from Glendale Datsun in California. I am the fourth owner and have had it since July 2014. Highlights include original matching numbers
engine that has been rebuilt and completely detailed with head work done by
Glen’s Machine in Round Rock TX. The
5spd transmission is from a 280z and has been rebuilt and painted. The suspension has been rebuilt with all
rubber bushings and all hardware blasted and powder coated satin black. All of the suspension has been kept as close
to stock as possible. The dealer spec 14
x 5.5” mag wheels have nearly new Douglas 195/70/14 tires mounted on them with
chrome push in bullet center caps. Various
electrical updates have been made including a MSA modern style fuse box, 80 amp
int. regulated alternator with polished case, and headlight and turn signal
relay kits from Dave Irwin. A new
windshield was recently installed along with a new Precision gasket. A Carter electric fuel pump and Holley adj.
fuel pressure regulator are installed in place of the mechanical pump but all
of the original mechanical pump components and filter bracket are included with
the car. The rear hatch vent system has
been completed refreshed with new seals, hardware, and chrome vents. The taillights have new gaskets and were
polished while off the car.
This is a series-1 car and it has all of its series-1
specific components – 2400 valve cover, non-flapper air filter box, console, no-hole steering wheel, non-recline seats, quick ratio steering rack, vented
rear hatch, and vertical defrost rear glass. I have the original series-1 steering wheel which is in great shape and
it is included with the car. It can be
easily reinstalled but the current wheel is more fun to drive with due to its
thicker grip and smaller diameter. I
also have a full set of 14x4.5” steel wheels and re-chromed D wheel covers
which are also included. The chrome is a
6 out of 10 as the wheel covers were in bad shape when I got them and thus the
chrome is not smooth all over. The ‘D’
medallion center caps are fully intact with all of their mounting pins present
but are not clipped to the wheel covers. This in case the new buyer wants to paint the inserts dark gray. Also included is an original steel cooling fan
that can be mounted on the car but due to its weight, the current plastic fan
on the car is the way to go. The
original auto-seeking AM radio works but the bulb is out behind the tuning
indicator. Please click on the link to
see a video of it in action.

The car does have some rust in the passenger side floor pan, a tiny spot on the pass. Side rocker, and both frame rails under the floors
were re-welded at some point in the past. There is also some filler on the driver side
wheel well above the frame rail. Other
issues include, the top slider in the heater control panel is stuck, the Honda
blower motor recently stopped working, and the driver side door hinges are worn
but the door opens and closes fine. I
have an original set of passenger side hinges that can be used for parts. There is currently no glove box liner but a
280z plastic liner is included that can be slightly trimmed to fit the 240z
dash.
The car runs strong, drives well, stops great, and stays
cool in any weather. All lights, gauges, and accessories work on the car except the clock and the items mentioned above. It is driven to various events on a regular
basis and took second place in the 240z daily driver class at ZCON this year. The passenger side visor is signed by Yoshihiko
Matsuo, the original designer of the 240z. The paint on the car is a taped paint job from the 90’s. The car was painted BMW dark gray metallic in
the 80’s and evidence of this paint job can be seen in the door jambs and the
hatch jamb. The car has been good to me
during my ownership but I want to get something I can modify – triple Webers, better brakes, AC, etc. Even though
those items are bolt-ons, it would be a shame to change such an original car.
The car is located in Hutto Texas just 20 minutes north of
Austin. It was just recently inspected
and registered and is good until June 2018 for a Texas buyer. If you are far away you could easily fly in to
Austin and drive the car home or if shipping is needed I can assist with
arrangements. In person inspections and
test drives are welcome with proof of insurance. Please take some time to look through all of
the pictures in the link below. If you
have any questions please let me know and if a phone conversation is easier
that can certainly be arranged. Thank
you for looking and good luck!

“Car is used but in overall very good shape with only minor rust and a few imperfections here and there. Several large components have been rebuilt including the engine, transmission, and suspension. It is a car ready for the new owner to enjoy as-is or take it to the next level.” |
