About this vehicle
This 1989 Toyota MR2 is a project vehicle with updates to the drivetrain. The owner has had it for 5+ years. The vehicle runs great and is used as a daily driver. Seller's Notes
Car is located near Poplar Bluff, MO in zip code 63967 and buyer will need to be pick it and the extra parts up there. Vehicle Details I bought this car in 2004 from a used car dealer as a restoration project at 155, 065 miles. There is some rust as it was a midwestern car. It has a rebuilt title due to the car being impounded after the previous owner was picked up by the state police at the local interstate rest area. A towing company received a salvage title to compensate them for storage fees. It is complete; t-top bags, sunshades and all factory ground effects are included.
During my tenure with the car:
1. I had the engine rebuilt at a reputable local engine shop. (Owned by the NHRA Funny Car drag racer Tim Wilkerson to work on his engines)
2. I replaced the transmission with a good used one, new clutch, hydraulics, flywheel, and rebuilt axles.
3. Replaced the supercharger with a good used one.
4. Replaced water pump, alternator, and timing belt.
5. Had the fuel injectors cleaned, rehabbed, and flow tested.
6. Replaced coolant hoses and vacuum lines.
7. Replaced alternator, plug wires, and plugs.
8. New exhaust including catalytic converter, muffler, flex pipe, and O2 sensor.
9. Replaced all the engine and chassis bushings with polyurethane.
10. New shocks installed and returned to factory wheels.
11. Replaced ball joints at all four corners, and inner/outer tie rod ends. Alignment at local shop.
12. New swaybar end links.
13. Replaced all brakes and calipers.
14. Replaced emergency brake cables.
15. Upgraded the rubber brake hoses to braided stainless.
16. Fixed the leaking t-tops with new door/top seals and fixed the spot welds on the part in the middle of the roof that had come loose. Replaced the corner rubber and the occasional drips down the window have all but stopped.
17. Replaced the front headlight brackets with good used ones.
18. Replaced radio with CD/USB/SD card/Bluetooth/line in “Dual” brand unit from Crutchfield, with their factory connectors. Also new speakers at all four corners.
19. Passenger window switch works occasionally, driver automatic door lock switch doesn’t work. Other electronics work.
20. Had the windshield replaced.
21. I never worked on the air conditioner. It’s there, but doesn’t work. The heater does.
22. Fixed a hole in the passenger footwell with a fiberglass patch.
23. Started to work on the rust and realized I suck at body work and never put the factory ground effects back on, they come with the car.
I got the car to a good stopping place and then drove the car approximately 36K miles in 10 years in its current condition. The supercharger gives great low-end torque but doesn’t spoil the high revving natural aspirated engine note near the redline. It’s mid-engine driving bliss and I loved every minute of it. I moved to the DC area in 2018 and didn’t want to sell it so I left it at my father’s house. It has been sitting with him doing occasional startups in the 3 years since. It needs nothing to run and drive, maybe a battery. I don’t have space at my apartment and don’t foresee a time in the near future when I will have the room, so it needs to go to a new home. I don’t really want to sell it, but I can’t stand to watch it not run. I know it’s not good for her.
I kept quite a few old parts for this car just in case they need to be rebuilt in the future. Parts included in the sale that are not on the car:
1. 1989 MR2 Factory Service Manual (Big Green Book)
2. Good used front passenger fender in black.
3. Driver’s rear brake light with small area of cracks near license plate bracket
4. Original side skirts between the front and rear wheel, also the factory mudguards
5. Two sets of headlight body panel tops (one set in matching blue, one set in grey)
6. One set of used pop up headlight assemblies with motors.
7. New horns in box, originals are weak.
8. Original radio/tape player head unit.
9. Set of axles to rebuild.
10. Original transmission from the car, would need to be rebuilt.
11. Clutch slave cylinder with bracket and hard lines as shown in the photo.
12. Old clutch and flywheel.
13. Original supercharger - the coating (looks like Teflon) on one lobe of the old one was delaminating in an area the size of a quarter.
14. Alternator to be rebuilt.
15. Emergency brake under car bracket and one cable.
16. Front motor mount.
17. Original factory header with at least one crack.
18. Underbody center tunnel plastic covers.
19. Another box of miscellaneous interior and other parts.
