Let me start by saying I own a company which buys cars on our client's behalf. I hate when I am mislead about a vehicle I am purchasing and so I do not mislead others. Another benefit is because I am licensed I can write up your paperwork and include a 60 day DE temp tag/registration at no additional costs to the buyer.
I bought this clean body Geo Tracker a few years ago as a fun project for my son and myself. We've done needed mechanical and cosmetic work and its a very cool looking vehicle. I get more looks, thumbs up, and Like your car when I drive this than when driving things worth ten times as much. We live at the beach and it's been primarily a fun summer cruiser. My son's going to college out of state in August so it's time to pass the Tracker on. There are very few around this clean/original so if you are looking for one, this is worthy of your consideration. I'm going to start the bidding at $6500 base with no reserve. If you want to make an offer over that, I will consider it. But I can tell you the similar one that sold recently for $10K more is not $10K more car!
The body is absolutely solid. I had it repainted only because of paint fade and decal wear, not rust or accident damage. One photo will show the car in its original paint and graphics a year ago. If you like that look the graphics are being reproduced I believe. This isn't a unit that's been all worked over. Its close to original. The top and wheels are newer. The engine may have been replaced previously because there is a code on it in paint crayon that is often used by salvage yards to ID parts. The dash shows 160K but the engine may have far fewer miles. I have no way of knowing that. I put on a little wider painted steel wheels and nice BF Goodrich Radial T/A 245-60-15 tires to give the Tracker a stronger stance. The top is just a year old and in like new condition. The 4WD engages as it should. Ive driven it in the sand on Assateague Island many times. The AC works. We replaced the compressor and hoses. Also replaced the plugs, wires, alternator, belts, etc. The radio works--although better speakers would help. The clutch feels fine. We put quite a bit of $$ in the brake system to be sure it was safe on the road. Only trace of rust was a little on the floor on passenger side under the door. Ive treated it with Rust Stop. Appeared only to be a little surface rust. Even the carpets, seats, mats are original to the car.
Honestly Ive considered keeping it and going all the way and replacing the small1.6L motor with something more powerful and efficient. My choice would be a VW 1.9 diesel and there are kits available to facilitate that. (Rocky Road Outfitters can fill you in). That would make this Tracker an excellent daily driver, 3X more powerful with 2X better mpgs. The other thing Ive considered is removing the seats and having the floor sealed with something waterproof like Rhino-Liner. Could DIY with a couple cans of Flex-Seal. If that was done and waterproof seat covers put on you'd never need to worry about being caught in the rain. I usually take the top off around Memorial Day and leave it off all summer parked under our carport--- although its not hard to put on, just some snaps. One weakness in this year of Tracker is the trim that holds the top on over the rear windows and tailgate. Its plastic and after 20 years usually very brittle and breaks easily. Its not reproduced that I can find. Occasionally I see pieces show up from parts sellers on ebay. On our Tracker we reinforced the side pieces with epoxy. Isnt real pretty put it works and the top stays secure even on the road at 60 mph. The back piece over the tail gate needs to be replaced however to make the back fit snugly. By the way, I don't keep it on but believe I have the orig spare tire cover.
Probably my biggest complaint is the engine is the little 1.6L and is weak for my liking. It will cruise at 60mph+ but feels like it is working hard to do so, it if you know what I mean. It idles smoothly when warmed up. We did a general tune-up and also replaced the MAF and throttle body sensor. We also ran Seafoam through the oil, gas, and intake to remove sludge etc. It runs adequately but is sluggish under 3000 RPMs. I drive it a quite a bit in the summer and know how and when to shift etc. to get the most out of it, but takes some getting used to. Ideally, if you love these vehicles and appreciate their uniqueness, someone will buy this and drop a nice 1.6 or 1.9 turbo diesel from VW, or one of the other more powerful motors that will swap in. There's lots of discussions and advice about this on the Tracker/Samurai enthusiast websites. It would be an awesome ride with that done. If I do not sell it, that is the route I will go I think. But if you're main use is going to be beach and off road etc., you may not care about that upgrade. Btw, it does have a bar in front to enable towing behind an RV as well as a small receiver on the rear to enable towing a small trailer.
That's about what Id wish I knew if I was shopping online for a vehicle like this. If you have any questions, message me. I will tell you anything I know about it. My feedback on ebay over many years is 100%. Bid with confidence if you have the funds available. Located near OC MD. Car can be picked up when funds clear. Could also be delivered for a reasonable fee within 300 miles after payment. Good Luck!
