After five years of ownership, we're saying goodbye to our beloved V70R. It still runs very well, the transmission is smooth and crisp, and inside and out looks better than a 14 year old car should, but it's showing its age.
A little background on Volvo's R cars. The sedan (S60R) and wagon (V70R) have 300 horsepower turbocharged and dual-intercooled 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engines, adjustable sport suspensions, Brembo brakes, and luxurious interiors. They were made in very limited numbers during their 2004 through 2007 model run; in those four years, only 3, 407 V70Rs were imported into the US, so this is not a car you see very often.
The car has a titanium grey pearl metallic exterior with blue-black premium leather interior. In this car, everything that looks like leather IS leather, including the doors (and their storage pockets), armrests, and the binnacle over the instruments. This is uncommon except in the most expensive cars.
We purchased this car used in August 2012 to replace our 2001 Volvo V70 2.4t which was totaled after getting rear-ended by a big SUV. I've done the majority of the maintenance and repairs, with the exception of the rear shocks and steering position sensor (clock spring); these were done by Volvo specialist Swedish Imports in Kennebunk, Maine. For the entirety of our ownership, I've changed the oil every 7, 500 miles, per spec, with full synthetic.
Items upgraded, replaced, or major service performed since 8/2012 (not inclusive):

It has an aftermarket iPod and auxiliary audio input, located in the center armrest. I'm not sure how useful the old-style connector is with newer Apple devices; we use the device's 1/8 jack with our Android phones. There are no OEM floor mats, but we bought heavy WeatherTech mats for both front and rear, and they're included. (Not shown in the photos.) Also, it's got a Draw-Tite trailer hitch (class 2?), but no trailer wiring because I only installed it use with a bike rack and occasionally towing a rental log-splitter.
The leather has been maintained with Leatherique products. While it certainly doesn't look pristine, it looks far younger than you'd expect on a nearly 14 year old car. The only damage of note is a 3/8 hole near the back of the driver's bottom seat cushion, where the malfunctioning seat heater burned through. The driver's seat heat has been deactivated by pulling the appropriate fuse.
The paint has been maintained with Griot's Garage products, including cleaning with paint clay twice a year. As a result, it's super smooth. There are a number of small scratches, dents, and dings, and some other finish blems (clearcoat peeling in two spots, both on plastic fascias, and the top of the rear bumper is a mess from loading things into the cargo area).
The wheels are 17 Pegasus with a titanium finish. They have a moderate amount of curb rash, and one center cap is missing.
Problems of note:
Summer tires (which are on the car) are worn out, badly, and are very noisy. Despite what they look like, the alignment was checked recently, and Swedish Imports inspected the suspension; everything looks to spec. They also noted that my snow tires (not included with sale) had worn fine over the 7, 000 miles we drove on them since new in December, and chalked up the wear to the summer tires.Steering rack is leaking quite a bit. You can always tell when it needs topping-up, because it starts to moan when you turn. It may or may not pass your state's safety inspection with a leaking rack.
Other info:
While not a problem, someone who test drove it recently noted that the front right tire rubs the inside fender liner at full left lock. Both this car and our previous V70 (when equipped with the same 17 Pegasus wheels and 235/45-17 tires) have always done this, even with a brand new steering stop limiter installed. It's harmless, but I thought it worth mentioning.
The bottom line is that this is a nearly 14 year-old car with 170, 000 miles. While I can speak to the last five years and 90, 000 or so miles, I don't know how the previous owner (or owners - it was in Massachusetts and then Virginia, but may have been one owner) maintained it. It was well cared for under our ownership, but will need some attention to fix the current problems and keep up with aging components. The care and upkeep are beyond the time and money I want to spend, given its age and our needs, so we're letting it go. (Reluctantly, since this car is destined to become a classic; if I had a three car garage, I'd be keeping it.)
Given the tiny number of V70Rs that were imported into the USA, I'm hoping that I don't look back on this moment in ten years or so and wish I'd kept it. . . .
