This vehicle was just recently purchased by us from State Farm Insurance in North Hollywood California. Maybach’s latest therapy comes in the form of a sport package, of sorts, although it’s not badged an AMG model. It pins a unique nose on the short-wheelbase 57 model and adds 62 horses, 20-inch 11-spoke wheels, 0.6-inch-lower ride height, thicker anti-roll bars, and a stiffened Airmatic suspension. The 57 S also has a perforated leather steering wheel, “piano black” and carbon-fiber interior accents, available Vesuvius black or Aspen white super-supple leather seats with decorative piping, and body-color panels in the headlamps’ background. The car’s headliner and interior side paneling is anthracite-colored Alcantara to complement the piano black and carbon-fiber trim.
AMG’s 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 in the 57 S is a larger, modified version of the 57’s 5.5-liter, 36-valve twin-turbo, and it’s the same engine used in the S65 AMG. The 6.0-liter makes 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet versus the 5.5’s 542 horses and 664 pound-feet and has a special low-temperature, water-to-air intercooler. This engine, each one handbuilt by a single AMG craftsman, provides subtle, effective torque. Maybach claims a 5.0-second 0-to-62-mph time for the 57 S, 0.4 second quicker than the conservative base model. Top speed of 275 kph, or 171 mph, exceeds Germany’s “gentlemen’s agreement” speed limit by 16 mph.
At three tons, the 57 S is some 1400 pounds heavier than the new Mercedes S550. That’s serious mass, and you’ll feel it in how the 57 S accelerates. Acceleration is impressive, not excessive, and it launches with smooth authority–emphasis on “smooth.” Just as it should be in a luxury sedan, even a driver’s version. The 57 S is as steady and solid as anything you’ll drive well into the triple digits, although wind and road noise start to intrude at such speeds. It rolls liberally in the corners, with slow but controllable transitions, until you remember the three-position Airmatic suspension adjustments. Medium-setting damping doesn’t do much good, but the stiffest setting firms it up nicely, inspiring a lot of confidence in a car that’s the length of a 1959 Buick Electra 225. There’s still serious body roll in the top setting, as the suspension never becomes harsh over rough pavement. The recirculating-ball steering has no more feel than more modern Mercedes rack-and-pinion systems, but its weight and quickness are about right.
So is the 57 S enough to lure you from your Phantom? Maybach likes to point out that its chief competition is a luxury yacht or that vacation condo in Aspen, but, come on: Fact is, the car that might easily have been called a 600 or Pullman (if it were badged a Benz) competes directly with Rollers and Bentleys. The 57 S is the most interesting car in the line for enthusiasts, but it feels like an 11/10ths-scale AMG S-Class. For the industry titans and hip-hop stars who can afford one, the sportified Maybach is impressive–but also further muddles a confusing identity
