As one would expect from this hot hatchback, this 2010 Mazdaspeed3 delivers excellent handling and plenty of power from its turbocharged engine. The transmission and overall handling feels very European. There's also some steering-wheel tug (aka torque-steering) at wide-open throttle--the official line is that a little torque steer adds to the fun--but it's not the wrestling match of the 2007--09 models.
Anyway, for those who appreciate numbers, the Mazdaspeed3 engine makes 263 horsepower and, wait for it, 280 pound-feet of torque. Let me repeat, 280 pound-feet of pure twist to the front wheels. Most V-6s would be proud to produce that kind of torque.
This Mazdaspeed3 has been the unbeaten champ of the overheated-hatch (aka hot-hatchback) segment, prevailing in three comparison tests and winning a place on Car and Driver's 10-Best Cars list. It's a little rascal of a car--gleefully defiant, tailback nimble, electric-shock quick, hatchback practical--and as it marches toward middle age.
Generally speaking, this car is just FAST AND VERY FUN to drive--even going up into the Colorado Mountains without any lag in power!!!
