Cheap! Great first
track car or fun, reliable daily driver. Yes, you absolutely can drive this car for years and years just the way
it is. If you feel perfectly smooth
sheet metal is worth 5-10 thousand dollars, move on. Not as pretty as a flood salvage, but more
trustworthy!
I bought this car in
early 2014 in wrecked condition. Car was
not hit hard enough to require any structural reconstruction, but because it
was hit front and rear with minor sheet metal damage in multiple places, it
took just enough damage to total it for insurance purposes. To keep the car cheap I rebuilt myself
replacing only what was necessary and skipping any professional paintwork. Both front and rear bumper covers and bumper
braces were replaced (the damage seen to the front bumper is from an impact
with a raccoon shortly after I rebuilt it). Numerous plastic covers, panels, and braces generally not visible were
repaired or replaced. There is minor
structural damage up front. The radiator
is pushed back about an inch on the right side, and there is a broken bracket
on the bottom right of the radiator fan assembly. From the overhead photo of the hood you can
see the gap is wider between the right fender and hood, and the gap between the
hood and bumper cover is uneven across. The predrilled mount holes in the front bumper cover had to be elongated
or re-drilled so I could pull the bumper cover forward enough so the hood did
not sit on top of it when closed. You
will have to repeat that if you want to replace the beat up front bumper cover
(about $300 for the part). Bumper cover
is still clamped tight by the bolts, so it doesn’t shake or shift or feel
otherwise loose. There is also a kink in
the lower control arm on the right side. This is a major steering component, but it is a substantial piece of
metal and still does the job just fine. I’ve put the car through its paces, with about 100 miles being on a
racetrack cornering at its limits, and had no handling issues at all. The interior is clean and in appropriately
good shape for any low mileage car. The
only exception being a slightly bent steering wheel and slightly twisted
steering column housing. Steering is
precise and amazingly responsive as a good sports car should be. I just had the car aligned, and it tracks
straight. No airbags were deployed in
the accident. Most wheels have cosmetic
damage, but color and design of the wheels hide it fairly well. Love the 15 spoke factory wheels. Really solid and dissipate heat well on the
track. I’ll skip the volumes of photos
from every conceivable angle, and concentrate on the ones that show damage and
a few that show the whole car and engine compartment. You shouldn’t have any surprises. I recently replaced the rear bumper brace
(you couldn’t find them used 3 years ago), and will include a photo that shows
some of the damage hidden under the rear bumper cover.
The car remains solid between the wheels. Doors and trunk open and close without issue. No leaks, water or air. Despite the firm suspension, there are no
squeaks, rattles, or annoying buzzing sounds. Everything works as it should. Most Scions come with the same options. Cruise control, air, cd, etc. All
work fine. Fly in and drive this car
anywhere. Headlights are better aligned
then our Nissan Versa, and that’s never been wrecked. Tires and brake pads have been replaced since
my last track day, and are near new. Just changed motor oil – Mobil 1 full synthetic 0-W20. Mechanically, the car has not been altered in
anyway. These cars come out of the box
amazingly well set up for track use. For
3 years and 17, 000 miles this car has performed flawlessly as a daily driver, and a few times on a track. I’ve had
fun, but time to pass it on. Enjoy!
