Alfa Romeo : GTV
for sale

Price: US $5,100.00

Description:

I purchased the car in Connecticut in 2002 and drove the car back to Toronto and and then did a complete restoration on it. My objective in doing the restoration was to make the car better than new and I spared no expense in trying to achieve that end. The reserve price in place is well below the cost of the restoration.
The car showed 51000 miles on the odometer when I started the restoration. The previous owner had purchased it in 1985 with 39438 miles showing on the bill of sale.
Restoration (Body)
I started off by taking it into the body shop for a respray and before I knew it I was taking the body down to bare metal and totally restoring the body.
The paint job consisted of stripping the car to bare metal; then a self etching zinc rich primer, six coats of primer, (with sanding) 3 coats of base coat followed by 3 coats of clear coat.
The original colour of the car was silver, so I repainted it in silver however I used an Audi paint (code PPG 34539) as it was deeper and richer than the original Alfa silver.
I am obviously biased but I think it is the nicest colour I have ever seen on an Alfa and totally emphasizes the beautiful lines of the car.
Restoration Mechanical
I worked very closely in rebuilding the mechanicals with Leny Aldino, owner of Leny's garage and an iconic name in Toronto Italian car circles. I had known Leny for many years and always enjoyed tapping into his knowledge and expertise. He had raced a number of Alfas and at one time had the Maserati dealership for Toronto; sadly Leny passed away about five years after he did the restoration, but we had a lot of fun discussing the mechanical rebuild.
When we discussed which block to use he had wanted to use a 1750 block since it was a better revving engine and I insisted on using the 2000 block thinking that with the other changes we were making it would run better. After Leny drove the car he told me I was right to use the 2000 block based on the way it drives.
In addition to the brand new block, I put in new pistons and rings, new 45 mm Weber side draft carbs, an electronic ignition system. The engine was blue printed; the plenum for feeding the engine from the carbs was rebored to allow for more gasoline to be pushed through.
I put in headers a more aggressive cam, (but not the undrivable race cam), replaced the mechanical fan with an electric fan.
All parts used were brand new and were either OEM parts, or in the case of the mechanical upgrades top of the line components.
I have receipts for all the mechanical work and pictures showing the restoration in progress.
Restoration (Interior)
I replaced the carpets including the trunk carpet, and headliner, the rest of the interior is Ok but not pristine.
Full Disclosure
The tires are still showing good tread depth however they were purchase in 2002 and should be replaced
There is a small oil drip underneath the car; it is coming from one of the seals, not sure which one. It is nothing that needs addressing right away but you should be aware.
Even though I replaced the second gear synchromesh, it does take some care when changing gears into second gear.
Why I Am Selling

I moved into a condo and have been paying for an extra storage spot for several years. I find myself driving it less and less each year and cannot justify the expense given the amount that I drive it.
Conclusion
The engine sings when you drive it, I have set (using the ignition system), the red line at 7200 rpm well above the 5800 factory spec. The car is an absolute blast to drive and you will get many admiring looks and comments driving this car.
Longer term the value is sure to increase so it represents a good investment.
I hope the new owner enjoys the car as much as I have done.
