1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Sprint recent “barn find”.
Originally sold and titled as an 1966 (common in those days)
it was changed back to 1965 for smog exemption purposes while in California. Purchased
by second owner in 1968 and owned for the last 48 years. Freshly retrieved from
detached garage storage where it has been kept since 2003. The second owner
purchased the car in Ohio and then drove it to California via Wyoming in 1972. The car remained in California until the owner
relocated back to Ohio in 1997 and has had very little use since the mid 1990s.
Meticulous records by the second owner document the car’s history since 1968 with
detailed description of all mechanical and body work performed with receipts as
well as every fill up! Records suggest
that it has accumulated approximately 230, 000 total miles. Original exterior color
appears to be a lovely and unusual Azzuro Isseo (Isseo Blue) over a Tabac interior with color and build date awaiting
confirmation from Alfa Romeo Centro Storico (delayed as they are automating
their records!). The car was repainted a pale “golden yellow” (butter) still
evidenced in the original painted steel wheels in 1978 and again in 1982 and
repainted again in what can best be described as a salmon color, during a major
restoration in 1987/1988.
Timeless Scalino or “step-nose”
design, styled by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro during his early days at Bertone. Alfa Romeo Type 105.02, Chassis AR
614694, Engine AR00502*15803, this is the last
year of the series 1 105 Alfas. Original
1570cc (1600) Veloce engine with twin Weber 40 DCOE4 carburetors. Original and complete car with the addition of
the dual double ANSA exhaust which required modification to both the rear
valance as well as the spare tire well. Front badge is missing; wood arm rests
and repurposed interior door handles are functional but obviously not original
and neither are the custom speaker cutouts on the interior rear quarter panels
(1971 timeframe). Driver’s door exterior handle is inoperable; brand new
replacement and key are included but not installed.
The accident repair from a 1981/82
side-swipe behind the left front wheel-well is amateurish and will have to be
redone; rust on passenger floor pan needs to be addressed and repair on driver' floor pan which appears to be holding should be professionally
corrected. While rust on rocker panels appears to have been repaired and rocker panel protectors (an
option at that time) installed around 1982 it will also have to be re-addressed as
well as assorted rust on leading bottoms of doors and minor body “dings”.
Engine started easily once fresh
gasoline was introduced to the system and runs though it will need to be freshened. Water pump is leaking. Original Dunlop
brakes (one caliper is newer) not stuck but will obviously need rebuilding.
Complete set of records, owner’s manual, key codes, radio
blanking plate and variety of small spare parts are included as shown in the
extensive photo album. Approximately 475 photos organized in 5 folders can be seen at:
