This beautiful car has undergone a recent driver-level restoration that includes new paint in the rare original Sunflower Yellow, new carpeting, new seat upholstery, new vinyl top, and new tires. An original New Mexico car, it was set up as a mildly built street/autocross car with performance shocks and an aftermarket front sway bar. It's a blast to drive with nice handling, strong engine and smooth shifting transmission.
Drivetrain:
-The 2 liter double overhead cam engine is in good condition overall. It has received a thorough tuneup and current maintenance including new NGK plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, oil and filter, radiator hoses, belts, valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket.
-The Spica system was adjusted by a local Alfa specialist.
-Radiator was flushed and repaired for minor leaks.
-Transmission shifts impressively well through the gears, with no second gear synchro issues at all. Clutch feels and works as it should. The Alfa specialist suggested that a new transmission mount should be installed at some point.
Suspension and brakes:
-The brakes feel good with straight, even braking. Pedal feel is fine, and a visual inspection reveals good rotors and pads.
-Suspension is in good condition with performance shocks and a larger Shankle performance front sway bar. Steering functions well with quick turn-in thanks to the stiffer suspension.
Body:
-This Alfa was already fairly straight before paint. However, it did have a good sized dent in the nose panel on the passenger side. That side of the nose, from just behind the headlight opening to just before the centerline of the nose was replaced by the body shop. The workmanship is good quality, though the gap at the hood is a little closer on that side.
-Though essentially a rust-free car, there were a couple of small areas along the drivers side rocker that had some rust. One spot near the rear quarter was rusted through in a two inch area. This was ground down to bare metal, treated internally with POR-15 and then welded up with fresh metal. The few remaining areas were ground to bare metal and treated. There was also an area rusted through in the spare tire well, which was cut out, welded up with a patch panel, seam-sealed and coated in POR-15 and undercoating.
-After the body work, the car was guide coated several times, primed and then sprayed in 4 coats of single stage enamel. The paint was lightly color sanded, machine polished, and finished with a high quality Carnuba wax. The surface shows some orange peel, but really looks great.
-80's era Vitaloni mirrors look good on the car.
-The original Campagnolo wheels were stripped, primed, painted and cleared. Brand new Federal performance tires are installed.
Interior:
-The car received a new black carpet kit and light duty floor mats.
-Seats were disassembled and recovered in new original style vinyl seat upholstery. These were done as headrest-delete seats for a cleaner look, though the original rests will come with the car.
-The dash has some cracks and so is covered in a dash overlay that has been covered in black suede, giving it a nice high-end feel and look.
-A new Momo Montecarlo steering wheel and OMP aluminum pedals, as well as a brushed aluminum shift knob and suede shift and brake boots all lend a high quality, performance oriented feel to the car. The interior really does feel special every time you get in the car.
-Door panels and center console were refurbished. Hood and trunk releases were repaired.
-A new vinyl top was installed, which fits very well and looks great.
-Door handles and window winders work, though the passenger side door outer handle is slightly stiff to operate. The drivers side window makes some noise near the bottom of its travel.
-Passenger door seals are not in great shape, showing some tearing. Still functions fine.
Electrical:
-This Alfa has functioning headlights, both high and low beam, as well functioning taillights and all four side marker lights. The reverse lights work, as do the brake lights. The trunk and engine bay lights work correctly. The turn signals work with the exception of the rear passenger side. We will continue attempting to get that to work.
-Speedo, tach, gas gauge, and temp gauge all work.
-The heater blower and emergency flashers do not currently work.
-Windshield wipers work correctly.
Overall:
-This Alfa Romeo Spider is in very nice overall condition. It would be a welcome addition at a local car show, autocross, or classic car rally. It is fun to drive and amazing to just look at. There is still room for improvement or it can just be used as is with confidence. The classic Alfa Romeo market is really on the move and with good care, this is a classic that will continue to appreciate, making it a solid investment.
