Mechanics:
Starts, runs, and drives excellent with a steady idle and lots of power throughout the entire RPM range. The aluminum 2liter motor pulls hard with full compression in all 4 cylinders. Clutch is newer and feels great, as does the transmission which shifts smoothly and precisely up & down throughout all 5 gears and into reverse. Surprisingly no common 2nd gear crunch, unless you downshift into 2nd while the RPM is revved high (which is absolutely inevitable with any Alfa Romeo). Brakes are good with a firm pedal, bringing the car to a stop with confidence. Suspension is nice and tight while still comfortable and soft over bumps and uneven roads. Handles incredible and is an absolute joy to drive. It is a very reliable little sports car that I would not hesitate to take anywhere. All maintenance is up to date and the car needs nothing mechanically — just get in and enjoy.
Cosmetics:
This timeless Pininfarina-designed Italian roadster looks incredible in & out. The rich black paint is extremely deep and glossy, with very few imperfections to be expected of a car from this vintage. The paint could use a nice buff/polish/detail to remove some superficial swirl marks. All chrome trim is smooth and shiny with no pitting or oxidation whatsoever. There is absolutely no rust anywhere. The convertible soft top is cosmetically excellent with no rips or tears whatsoever. The rear plastic window is near perfect as well. It goes up & down with ease and locks tightly, sealing the interior from the elements, while also keeping road noise to a minimum. The interior is very clean and tidy. The seats are excellent, having been completely reupholstered a few years ago in black leather. The carpets, floor mats, center consoles, and door panels are all good as well. The dashboard is surprisingly crack-free, which is extremely rare on these cars. The trunk is tidy as well with clean carpeting throughout. The door jambs, rocker panels, wheel wells, undercarriage, and engine bay all look great cosmetically and more importantly are extremely solid and completely rust-free. All four “phone-dial wheels are straight and true with out any oxidation or pitting of the original bare metal finish.
Electrics:
As previously stated, this car is extremely reliable and I would not hesitate to jump in and go anywhere my heart desired. The ignition system operates as it should with no problems. All lights, inside & out, work as they should. There are no warning lights or check-engine lights on the dash cluster — but when tested they all work fine. Power windows are notoriously slow, but they do open & close. Power mirrors also work as they should. Radio and speakers work great and the power antenna goes up & down with no reception issues.
The Bad:
(1) The front right brake caliper is a little sticky. This happened over the winter while the car was being stored and not driven. The piston is not fully engaged so the wheels spins fine. I have a caliper rebuild kit and will probably have it rebuilt for the new owner.
(2) There is an odd-shaped roughly 3” round dent on the nose of the car, on the outside edge of the driver’s side headlight bucket, right above the front bumper (see photo). It looks to be easily fixable with a simple PDR (paintless dent removal).(3) The convertible soft top functions perfectly and looks incredible on the exterior. Unfortunately the interior of the soft top has begun to dry out a little, and is a bit of an eye-sore. Luckily it isn't visible unless sitting in the car and looking up while the top is closed.(4) The paint could use a mice buff/polish/detail to correct some swirl marks. Regarding the exterior cosmetics, there are no major imperfections otherwise, aside from the dent listed above.
Summary:
-Surely a great investment as classic car analysts & appraisers predict that these beautiful Pininfarina-designed Italian roadsters are going to dramatically increase in value within upcoming years.
-All Alfa Romeo Spiders are desirable, however the Series 4 (1991-1994) version is by far the most desirable. Being the last of 4 generations, it is the most modern and sorted. It is cosmetically & mechanically superior to its predecessors. This specific example is also a 'Veloce', which is the highest trim-level offered.
-Comparable examples are currently trading between $15, 000-$20, 000. I am looking to get substantially less for mine.
-
Please understand that this is a 23 year old classic car, so please have realistic expectations — Having said that, it is in excellent condition for its age and has tons of charm and character.
-
I have tried to describe the car as thoroughly and honestly as possible.
