Bodywork & Exterior Trim
The exterior of this well cared for 1976 AMC Hornet X is in excellent condition. Most of the paint on the car is original with exception for a few spots where it has been touched up. The stripes going the length of the car are original. This car was treated to a rust-proofing process when sold new and the plastic caps can been seen throughout the car in the door jams.
The panels are straight and the body gaps are also pretty good. There are three known spots of rust on the car. (1) A very, very minor spot on the driver's side lower quarter panel (see pictures in gallery). (2) Very minor surface rust on the bottom of the front driver's side door. (3) Very minor surface rust on the bottom of the front passenger side door.
The frame rails and shock towers in the engine bay area are intact and rust free. The metal around the battery is also intact.
This Hornet is equipped with a chrome roof rack and chrome bumpers. All of the chrome is in excellent condition. The car currently sits on 15 polished aluminum American Racing wheels and Firestone Firehawk tires. All four original 14 rally wheels are included.
Engine & Drivetrain
This Hornet was originally fitted with the optional 258 I6, but it has been replaced with an AMC 304 V8. The engine was recently freshened up with a 0.030 overbore and a mild street cam. There is about 1, 000 on the rebuild. The cooling system was also updated with a new water pump and an aluminum radiator.
The engine uses cast iron exhaust manifolds with dual exhaust running to the rear of the car. The mufflers are aftermarket and have a great sound (see video). There is not a crossover pipe in the exhaust.
The transmission is the same TorqueFlite 904 automatic that was behind the 258. AMC called it the Torque-Command. It works great behind the 304 V8 and shifts perfectly.
There is power steering and the brakes are power-assisted with front discs and rear drums. I do not know what differential or gears are in the rear axle. I presume they are original-spec.
Interior
Open the driver's door and find yourself in 1975. The entire interior is in excellent condition. The reclining split bench seat is very clean and has no rips or tears. The carpets are very clean, as is the headliner. An aftermarket JVC deck has been added below the optional dash shelf. Speakers were also added in the trunk area.
The dash is cracked on the passenger side, but it can probably be fixed or covered up by a dash pad. There is a factory sport steering wheel and optional rear glass defroster. The gas shocks for the rear hatch are charged and hold the lid up.
