I am the 5th owner of this
beautiful 1965 Rambler Ambassador 990H. The car is original & not a variously defined restoration. The 990H was the top of the
line Ambassador for the 1965 model year. The Ambassador is powered by an AMC 327ci/270hp V8 engine & Borg Warner 3-speed automatic transmission. The car has all available
options except tilt steering wheel & power windows. The car is factory equipped with
an AM/FM radio with Vibra-Tone. For us old people – REVERB! In the 1960's this was a high end option that enticed young women to show you their breasts. (My wife says that description is inappropriate. My apology to those offended.)
I have owner documentation starting with the transfer from
the original owner, Chester Miller, of Madison WI to the 2nd
owner Arthur L. Peacock, of Morris, IL on July 5, 1980. At that time
it is documented the car had 10032 miles. Further documentation
shows the transfer from Mr. Peacock to the 3d owner, Ted & Barb
Maleport, of Sault Sainte Marie, MI on February 9, 1983, with
documented miles of 11485. The Maleport's owned the Rambler for over 20 years, until
October 17, 2003 & sold the car to Jhon Jay Whiteside, also of
Sault Sainte Marie, MI with 29475 documented miles. Mr. Whiteside
operated a local body shop & adjacent used car lot in Sault Sainte Marie &
had spoken to the Maleport's for years about purchasing the
beautiful Ambassador. Mr. Whiteside's interest in the car was
business. He wanted to park the stunning car on his car lot during
business hours to attract customers. I purchased the car from Mr.
Whiteside on June 18, 2007 & transported to its current home in
Sheridan, OR. At transfer the car had 30353 original miles. Mr.
Whiteside stated in his 2007 Ebay Motors listing that “I am only the 4th
owner and have put less than 1000 miles on it myself. I am only
selling because I simply do not have any time to enjoy the car –
and somebody should be enjoying it.”
I have
years of vehicle documentation mostly from the 3d owner Mr. Maleport. Mr. Maleport stated in documentation – July 1995 – Hit a deer
on way to Iola, Wisconsin. Wrecked the front end pretty bad. Had to
have Kelvin & Rodney come & take car home on trailer.” 1996 - Insurance paid for car. We kept the car & had it
repaired. Bought parts from all over. Hood came from state of
Washington. Freight was more than the price of the hood. Had car painted by Collins Collision, terrible job, had it redone by P &
P Collision. Car was basically back together when I had a stroke in
August 1996.” There are lists from 1995/1996 of items replaced. Both new &
used parts. Many purchased from Blazer Auto, a current AMC/Rambler/Nash
parts dealer in Moline, IL.
I have averaged roughly 1000 miles per
year for the 8 years I have owned the Ambassador. I simply have lost
car show/club interest & for the past 3 or 4 years the
Ambassador has been covered & garaged. I take it on drives several
times a year to keep the tires turning & cylinders burning. The
car has won trophies at several prestigious car shows. In 2008 &
2009 the car was recognized as Best in Class & in 2009 awarded Most
Original at the 36th & 37th annual Forest
Grove Concours d'Elegance show, in Forest Grove, OR. In 2008, Concours judges told me they could not tell the car had been
wrecked or parts replaced. In 2010 the Ambassador won Best in Class
& People's Choice trophies at the AMCRC National Meet, in
Sacramento, CA.
Over the years I have replaced many mechanical
items, to include brake parts, power brake booster, 600cfi double pump
Holley carburetor, water pump & thermostat, NOS clock, battery & cables, A/C compressor, alternator, voltage regulator, fluids & tires. The car has
aftermarket oil pressure, AMP gauges (which I tuck under the dash
during car shows) & emergency flashers which weren't available
until 1966. Last year I installed a period correct 12 volt battery & new period correct cables from Antique Auto Battery. I have also installed a pusher fan. Fan is not visible &
switch/wiring is hidden from car show judges. The only blemish
is the fraying in the driver's seat back. I have factory
matching fabric, vinyl and welt (note photo) from SMS Auto Fabrics in Canby, OR
for interior upholstery. I have had the rear bumper re-chromed, the
grill re-anodized & vacuum plating for the interior C-pillars. There is not a flake of rust on the car. It's been wet more from
washing than rain. The auto glass, dash, carpet, door panels, felt & headliner
look as though they're in a 1965 vehicle with 37050 miles. To my
knowledge, everything works. The exception is I replaced the A/C compressor late last
year and have not charged the system. It is ready for 134A
refrigerant. Please look the pictures over closely; I am human &
it's possible I've missed something. I have tried to be complete
with history & description. Please feel free to ask questions. I will respond in a timely manner with all available information. All trophies &
documentation belong to the car. My hope is the Ambassador goes to a
caring home that shows the vehicle the appreciation it deserves &
has received for the past 50 years.
All expenses associated with vehicle shipping are responsibility of buyer. Seller will assist in preparation & shed tears when the Ambassador makes the trip to its new home.
