Description:

I rescued this car from a junkyard here in CO and saved it from the crusher over 20 years ago! Now it needs to be saved from my ever-growing, ever-lasting project list...I just don't have time to dedicate to this amazing machine, so I want to find it a new home with someone who loves AMC's and realizes what great cars they put together!
This rare sedan is still wearing it's original Trans Am Red paint (much closer to orange) in very good condition! A little wax every 6 months or so and it shines like new on 95% of the body. It was ordered with the high-performance 285hp 360 V8 4bbl engine and the rock-solid Torque-Command 727 automatic transmission. It has power steering AND (rare) power brakes (drum brakes on all four corners).
This car runs well and drives, but the front end has suffered from the well-known ball joint issues these full-sized AMC's often develop (experimental two-piece ball joint design that wasn't a good idea) and the brakes need to be gone-through (one rear wheel will lock up VERY easily)...it'll stop, but you want to plan ahead! It has not been on the road regularly for over 20 years, so don't plan to drive this car home...please plan to transport/trailer it!
Mechanical Condition:Engine runs well (gets started regularly even though it doesn't get driven often)...carb was rebuilt 18 years ago and is probably due for another rebuild (Motorcraft 4300 4 bbl)Transmission works well and doesn't leak fluidBrakes work but one wheel locks up easilyPower steering works smoothly and no leaksStill runs points...distributor and points replaced with rebuilt unit 18 years ago but no problems sinceWater pump replaced 15 years agoFuel pump replaced this yearDoes not have a battery (I will put one in to load this car on a transport, but I won't leave it in)Interior Condition:Headliner is perfectCarpet is near perfectDoor panels are perfect condition (could use detailing, but otherwise perfect)Dash is in great shape and instrument cluster is perfectFront seats are horrible...padding is missing from the bottoms (springs exposed) and upholstery has just come apart...seat backs are ok and headrests are goodBack seat is in good condition but very delicate (some fabric coming loose)Older AMC AM/FM currently in dash works intermittently...original AM radio in trunkCheck out the photos...this car still looks great inside (especially since it's 44 years old and a junkyard car!)Exterior Condition:I believe the damage to the exterior is the only reason the previous owner dumped this poor low-mileage car at the junkyard...I just got lucky the scrapper was willing to sell me this car before it was ever processed into his yard!Front bumper - good condition...just needs polishing. One bumper guard pad is damaged but there.Front grille and surround - good condition...passenger side surround is damaged (cracked)...replacement pieces provided in the trunkHeadlamp bezels - driver's-side is good condition, passenger-side is missing (won't fit due to passenger-side front damage)...replacement bezel provided in trunkHood - paint is great condition...minor denting along front edge...Matador script is in good shapeDriver's-side fender - dented at front lower edge (in front of wheel opening)...paint is still shiny and original pinstripe is still nice. Wheel well molding is bent (with fender) and side marker light is broken (see pictures)Driver's-side front door - great condition...paint is shiny, pinstripe and stainless trim is in good shape. Original sport mirror in good shape.Driver's-side rear door - great condition...paint is shiny, pinstripe and stainless trim is in good shapeDriver's-side 1/4 panel - great condition...paint is shiny, pinstripe and trim is in good shapeRear bumper - mostly in good condition...small patch of rust where the original dealer tag (Bob Bundy AMC in Denver) was installedTail-lights - great shape, as is the trim panel between the tail-lightsTrunk lid - great shape, paint still shiny...AMC emblem above trunk opening is toasty but still thereRoof - great shape, paint is still in great shape over most areas...some minor fading over the sail panel on driver's sidePassenger-side 1/4 panel - needs some work. Paint is good, pinstripe is good, but there's a small 2 strip of rust at the bottom behind wheel opening and there's a rip and squash directly behind the rear door on the 1/4 panel...no idea how the previous owner managed to do it...must've gotten the car caught on something in the door opening that ripped it open. See the photo.Passenger-side rear door - decent condition but dented at rear of door (in front of 1/4 panel rip)...stainless trim and pinstripe look goodPassenger-side front door - good condition, paint is shiny and pinstripe/trim is goodPassenger-side fender - probably needs to be replaced...somehow the previous owner got the front end of this beautiful car shoved underneath something that crushed the front edge of the passenger-side fender (see picture). Other than that crush damage, the fender looks good from the side (shiny paint, good wheel well molding, good marker light and good pinstripe)All glass is good (wing windows work smoothly), including windshieldAll tires are very old...they will hold air for a few days but not much longer than that...should have white-walls on it anyway (IMHO)Antenna is missing it's bezel and nut, so it has fallen into the fender...it's there thoughOverall, please check out the photos...they tell the story...this car is a beauty and it just needs someone who has the time/money to finish it up and get this out to the car shows (you'll be the ONLY ONE I can pretty much guarantee...I haven't even seen another 1st generation Matador sedan on the road in the last 15-20 years! This car already turns heads...mainly because nobody knows what it is! What a great car though!
This vehicle is being sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS and needs to be transported/trailered (buyer's responsibility)...no warranties/guarantees implied.
$500 deposit via PayPal required immediately...remaining balance due within 10 days from the end of the auction. I will store this beauty for up to 30 days after completion of the transaction to give buyer enough time to arrange for transportation.
Please help me to continue rescuing this great old AMC! They're a dying breed (unfortunately)...and this one can certainly be great again with just a little work!
Thanks for looking!
