My
history with Big Healeys goes back for 18 years beginning with ownership of a
1960 BT7 that received many improvements from my labor and from professional
mechanics. This 1967 BJ8 was bought in
July 2006 from a prior owner who became disabled and could not drive it. He had the car for about 10 years subsequent
to a prior restoration.
My
first move was securing a British Motor Industry Heritage Certificate that
confirms it is a “matching numbers” sports car built in July 1967 and sent to
the USA. The car was originally painted
“Healey Blue” as a solid color. During
the restoration, the coves were painted in a cream color with a popular shade
of pale blue for the shroud, bonnet, boot and wings. By using a strong magnet on dozens of
locations, I cannot find any steel panels with “Bondo” repairs. The car has satisfactory undercoating and
rocker panels/floor pans have no indications of rusting. The vinyl top has no leaks or tears but does
have some shrinkage. The car has been
garage kept at my home for the past 10 years. I protect the car while parked on overnight driving trips with a
custom-designed full vinyl cockpit cover attached to the existing snaps used
for a traditional tonneau.
Various
(new) upgrades installed by me are: gas tank, radiator, fuel pump, heater
hoses, small chrome parts, tubeless - 72 spoke Dayton chrome wire wheels, Vredestein tires, fan belt, distributor rotor and badge bar. I installed 3-point seat belts and steel
“towing eyes” for easy attachment to a roll-back tow truck. The biggest functional improvement was a
full, new vinyl interior installed in early 2007. The speedometer was rebuilt by Nisonger
Instruments in 2009.
The
car has been driven from Northern Virginia to Healey Conclaves in Vermont, southern
Virginia, Pennsylvania and many “road trips” in the Mid-Atlantic States with no
mechanical problems. My mileage total is
6, 000 over the past 10 years. Condition-wise, the paint is bright with a few spot repairs. The engine bay is clean but not detailed
except for valve cover painting. Multiple shop manuals (including a CD-ROM) plus restoration guides and
20 years of maintenance records go with the car.
A
vintage sports car in this condition draws conversation and compliments whether
driven to hotels, restaurants, parks or car shows. It has been a privilege to own this BJ8 and
hopefully send it onward to an eager new owner for many more years of
enjoyment.
