Low Reserve! This happy little british sportscar will sell to the highest bidder after the low reserve is met...
The Sprite model was launched in 1958 as the “Bugeye” which had substantial success in sports car racing. In 1966 the Sprite model was redesigned to this body style - and badge engineered with the MG Midget. The model only ran through the 1971 model year, while MG Midget lived on a few years longer.
This Sprite is a good honest little sportscar with a good history and documentation. It runs and drives great and is fun to drive. The car shifts well, steers true and the brakes function properly. The chrome and glass are tip-top. And the convertible top, tonneau cover and tires are in great shape. Currently the car lives in the garage in car climate friendly Southern California.
The car is finished in black paint, which is in good to fair condition. The paint shines like a mirror on most of the car, but there are some minor dents, scratches, some checking and hazing on the boot lid, and a couple small rust bubbles on the lower front quarter panels (see photographs). The car was originally British Racing Green, as can be seen inside the boot area / rear trunk. Respraying the little Sprite in its original BRG had always been my plan, but the paint was never an embarrassment – so other projects and expense took president.
The odometer shows 35, 982, but the speedo is currently in-op, so the car is sold TMU - true miles unknown.
This vehicle was purchased new by Jack Deacon, in Louisville, KY in 1967. In 1971, my father-in-law, Don Heckman purchased it from Jack who was his next door neighbor. It has remained in the family since, carrying one of his sons (Brett) to college at Middle Tennessee State University. After college, the car sat unused in an unheated garage attached to Brett’s house.
I purchased the car in 1992. Purchase is a strong word. Let’s just say I gave him some money and he gave me the title. He needed money and I wanted a hobby car. I have owned it since, moving it from the Nashville garage where Brett had it stored, to our home in New Jersey. In 2001 we moved to Southern California where the car is today.
It had substantial work to get it running in 1992. The engine had seized, so it was bored slightly and a more aggressive street cam added along with headers. At the same time, brakes, brake lines, new muffler and exhaust system were added, the clutch replaced, carbs re-built and a new top and carpets were added. In 1993 a new tonneau was purchased, 4 new bias ply tires (for authenticity), a new water pump was installed and seat belts were added. In 1994, the brake master cylinder was replaced. In 1998 a new battery was installed and some small misc. work like a new trunk seal was replaced. In 2002 the shift lever boot was replaced, air intake hose replaced, clutch slave cylinder replaced and new speedometer gear was installed (which broke again after 3 weeks – and remains in-op today). All hoses were replaced. In 2003 carbs re-built (again) and gas pedal repaired. In 2008 new battery installed and positive ground installed so in car entertainment could be added….which never was.Since then, only annual services have been performed except for moving the drivers seat back 2 inches in 2012 to provide a more comfortable ride for my tall-ness - should have done this years ago!I have recently retired and the time has come to sell a few items prior to relocating to the South East. The Sprite is ready for its next owner to twist the key and enjoy.
