Description:

Austin Healey Sprite Mk III, 1964
Fabulous example, ‘hot’ engine, rust free, 5 speed trans
INCREDIBLE floor, sills, trunk floor, exterior, etc…….can’t find a speck of rust. And with beautiful red paint, absolutely gorgeous.
Engine: last owner rebuilt it for, it seems, autocross use. Strong high lift camshaft, head work, headers, twin SUs, my tests: 155-160 psi compression in every cylinder, 50 psi oil pressure when warm, zero smoke cold or hot. Feels faster than any stock 1275 Spridget I ever drove. And revs fantastically. Engine is the late model 10CC 1098cc with the superior 2” main bearings and beefier crankshaft.
Trans is a modern 5 speed close ratio all synchromesh unit. AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!! While in 4th, the car is very buzzy at 3, 700 rpm, shift into 5th and it calms down to a refined 3, 000 rpm. YES, you can actually drive somewhere in this car.
New front disc calipers with new Aeroquip flex lines, new front and rear springs, new bushings, rear tube shock conversion, front sway bar added, a good set of radial tires on original wheels.
Chrome is quite nice, probably original, not pitted or peeling. Convertible top is in good condition as is the full tonneau cover. Has spare wheel/tire, jack and original lug wrench.
Seats look fairly new, beautifully done in red with white piping. Dash, interior panels, and carpets are all in good condition. New seat belts, nice original steering wheel, all gauges work properly, same with the heater (AND the original heater switch works….this is a very rare piece, not being reproduced, and while it can be replaced with a cheap toggle switch, impressive to see it still working).
Last owner told me it had a new wiring harness, looks good and everything works. Exhaust is mainly a glasspack and while not offensive, does have a nice throaty sound.
On the road, no rattles or clunks, excellent ride (for being a Sprite), handling, braking, and especially engine/trans operation and performance. While sure, we ALL love the concept of a Sprite, in actuality, they leave a lot to be desired. But this car is quick, high geared, a treat to shift through the (5) gears, and doesn’t miss a beat. And then…….there is that famous name…………
For the money, hard to imagine a better basic English sports car. And after fifty years of driving and owning Sprites, I would say this is the best single one I have ever encountered.
