Bentley Continental GT has proved an intoxicating blend of cash and dash. In fact, Bentley sold 6000 GTs worldwide in the model's first full year of production. Now follows the GTC, which is $200, 000 plus. With a triple-layer convertible top by Karmann. Of the 2700 GTCs that Bentley has allocated for the U.S. in 2007.
Our GTC weighed 5580 pounds — 222 pounds chunkier than the GT, thanks to stiffer sills, beefed-up A-pillars, and pop-up rollover hoops. It's worth it, though, because cowl shake is almost negligible, evident only when a single wheel catches a nasty ridge that the three others missed.
Push one button and the top lowers and stows in 25 seconds, doing so, without a hitch. With the top up, there's little wind noise. At a 70-mph cruise or at full whack, in fact, the GTC is but one decibel noisier than its tin-topped forebear. Moreover, the Trunk lid and top lid can be raised at speeds up to 19 mph, a source of vast amusement to the neighbors. The back seat can still hold two adults but only for about 20 minutes.
At idle, the 6.0-liter W-12 rumbles like a big-block Chevy and, at step-off, pumps out such colossal torque that you'd never suspect the two BorgWarner turbos lurking below. It's only at highway speeds, when you suddenly convert from light throttle to full Katy-bar-the-door, that minor lag is noticeable. Sixty mph arrives in 4.7 seconds, the quarter-mile in 13.2. Why the convertible is 0.2 second quicker than the lighter coupe, says Bentley. Despite the GTC's new rear suspension — altered to make room for top stowage — the ride mimics the GT's: firm, direct, yet never harsh. There's minimal body roll, and lateral grip is tenacious. The all-wheel drive pretty much ensures that no amount of throttle will rotate the tail. Push hard and all you ever get is understeer.
As quick as it may be in a straight line (and as quick as those huge brakes can dispel 70 mph), the GTC never feels agile — you're ever aware of its mass. What this Bentley does best — no surprise — is delight the senses. From the sumptuous wood inserts to the French vanilla leather to the carpets that must have decimated most of Shropshire's sheep, the GTC is a reliable tonic for restoring one's spirits. Every single surface is a tactile and visual victory.
