1980 BMW 528i e12 with original 77K miles and rare Brazil color.
I purchased this car from the original owner in Illinois because of its excellent condition, low miles, 5 speed manual and rare color. The car has been maticulously maintained by original owner. Garage kept, never driven in the winter, non smoker and no accidents. All service records and receipts are present and accounted for.
I had big plans to restore this car to showroom condition but I recently purchased a house so wife says NO PROJECTS!
Before I had it shipped to California, I had it inspected by the local mechanic who had cared for it most of its life. Because it had been minimally driven over the last 7 years I elected to have all fluids drained and replaced. Complete tune up was done including Bosch platunim pulls and spark plug wires. All filters replaced. Breaks needed service. All calipers were sent to specialist to be rebuilt, new rotors and break lines. Cost to service was $2600. A new Interstate Battery was placed as well. I have all itemized receipts.
After I had car slipped to California, I proceeded to have the car smog tested. The first time it did not pass due to high CO. All other indicies were well within normal limits. I proceed to have new O2 sensor and catalytic converter installed at a cost of $800. Car then passed with flying colors.
Car Condition and History
Exterior: The car is in amazing condition for age. Paint shines like new and has been well maintained. Minor scratches but no dents or ripples. The original owner stated no accidents, however said many years ago while car was parked someone bumped into and put a small crease in driver side front quarter panel and driver side door. As per repair record, front door and quarter panel were repaired and painted. Rather than painting to match factory pin stripping, tape pin stripping of similar color was applied to match. The paint job was done very well and is hardly noticeable except to the trained eye. My plan was not to repaint the car because the current pain condition is so good. I was going to have to take to paint restoration specialist and have taped pin strip off and replaced to match factory on left side of car.
There is very minor surface rust on the right rear wheel well and under right rear bottom chrome molding. See Pictures for detail. I normally do not purchase cars with any amount of rust but the rust is very small and superficial. It would be easy to sand and re-spray those area. No rust anywhere else. This is very rare for east coast car but original owner never drove car in winter salt. Exterior I would rate a very strong 8/10.
Interior: very clean, no dash cracks, all original. Driver side left bolster has a tear and would be easy repair by compitant upholstry person. Headliner, passenger seat and rear seat like new. Trunk like new with full original tool kit completely intact. Original spare present with no rust in tire well. First aid kit complete and intact. Interior I would rate 8/10.
Mechanically: Car runs like a dream, shifts smooth and accelerates like a champ. I have had many e28's in the past and there is no comparison between the performance of a automatic vs a manual transmission. 1980 was the first year the 5 speed transmission became available. AC blows cold. All electrical and mechanical components are fully functional.
I really hate to sell this car. I know I will likely not find another car like it. I have tried to represent its condition as best I could. Please ask any questions and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner.
