2001 E38 740iL, late MY01 with MK3 16:9 nav and all the very-late-production features and options.
2nd owner, I bought it from the original owner in Dec 2013 with 106k mi. It was bought when the water pump bearing on my daily driver failed and I needed something to drive while that got fixed. I had planned to do more work on this car and either sell it or give it to a family member to use, but I've been too busy and got tired of paying to keep it in a storage unit, so off it goes.
Clean reports (autocheck/carfax). Autocheck is incorrect about the number of owners due to financing. (It was leased originally.) The car was built on 7/21/2001 - during the last week of E38 production. It's probably the latest possible build.
Factory sport package iL (blackline window trim, Vavona wood trim, EDC, 18 MPars), cold weather package, rear sunshade per original window sticker that will go with the car.
Unusual metal sunroof (not the moonroof most E38s have), apparently fitted to some of the very late production from the factor.
Paint and panels are original according to previous owner, except for rear bumper. Confirmed by autocheck/carfax per above.
The interior is easily the nicest I've seen in an E38 recently. Detailer steam cleaned everything and treated leather and vinyl.
Work done just before I purchased it - 2nd half of 2013:
Complete cooling system including radiator, water pump, viscous coupling, fan, all hoses, belts - you can still see some of the stickers. Valley pan was also done.
New battery.
New rear tires - Michelin. Fronts, also Michelin, are still ~70%.
Dashboard LED lights fixed, no missing pixels.
Done while in my ownership:
Transmission fluid (Pentosin recommended by ZF) w/ FILTRAN filter.
Oil + filter (Mobil1 5W30), air filter.
Cabin microfilters.
$900+ detailing package from well-known local detailing shop, including interior detailing and four-stage exterior polish.
New alternator, OEM, about 100 miles ago.
What it still needs:
Front bumper has a crack. (See pictures.) I purchased another bumper that I was going to have painted and fit. Bumper will go with the car.
Rear bumper has a fair number of chips from previous owner.
Brake pads need to be changed.
Rear EDC shocks leak. To be replaced.
Steering idler arm needs replacing.
The power steering hoses seep. They don't actively leak and don't need replacing right away but if I kept the car I would put that on the to-do list. Fortunately, they're cheap and easy to change.
I took it to my mechanic to have him install new control arms and tie rods (because I realized I'd never find the time to do it myself), but he said they were actually in good shape and he wouldn't recommend replacing them yet. However, I do have the 20 piece front and rear suspension kit from Meyle for whenever those parts do eventually need replacement. I paid $1, 300 plus shipping for the kit but if a buyer wants the kit, I'll give it to them at $1000 over the purchase price.
There is no body rust, no oil leaks visible, no weird noises from engine or transmission. This car needs no major mechanical work. The work it does need is what I listed above, and is pretty normal wear-and-tear on a car with 100k+ miles.
