Buick’s biggest changes came in the form of a new naming system for what were essentially carried over 1934 models. From smallest to largest, Buick now had the following series names: Special, Super, Century and Limited. New for Buick in 1935 was an entry-level Special convertible coupe with grandiose styling cues, featuring a standard tan leather interior and a rumble seat to bring along two more! Weighing 3, 140 pounds and with a price of $925, the 46C convertible coupe was a rare bird, with production totaling only 933 units for domestic sale and an additional 67 for export. Today, they are very scarce but remain a classic in every way!
We are very excited to offer this 1935 Buick Special 46C Convertible Coupe! This car is finished in a lovely shade of Raleigh Blue (originally 415 – Bellevue Beige) with Light Blue pinstripe over correct 235 – Tan leather interior and tan convertible top with embroidered Buick insignias. This 117” wheelbase convertible coupe is equipped with its original 233ci Inline 8 with Stromberg down-draft carburetor that produces 93 horsepower; mated to the standard three-speed floor-shift sliding gear transmission and standard 4.33:1 rear end, this car is capable of 85 miles per hour! Options and features on this 46C include dual side-mount spares with hard covers, Buick fog lights, Buick luggage rack with Taylor Made auto trunk and four-piece luggage, front and rear bumper guards, functional glove box clock, dual visors, Buick heater, Delco radio with speaker, dual side-view mirrors, and added turn signals! The car rides on pinstriped steel artillery wheels with Buick “B” polished hubcaps wrapped in Firestone 6.50-16 Deluxe Champion gum-dipped wide whitewall tires!
This Buick has a fantastic two-owner history that starts on April 27th, 1935, when a Mr. Graham Lacy, Jr. ordered a 1935 Buick Special 46C Convertible Coupe from Dill-Wood Motor Co. in St. Joseph, Missouri. In addition to the car’s base price of $925, Mr. Lacy, who was the owner of Tootle-Lacy, a local St. Joseph bank, opted for a grease gun, seat covers and tire chains, raising the price to $1138! Mr. Lacy was a successful young man and already owned a sedan; he used this Buick only on the warmest and sunniest of Northwest Missouri days and was stored in a heated garage the rest of the year. Mr. Lacy owned the car until 1990, when he finally decided to sell it to a Buick collector in the nearby town of Cosby (14 miles away from St. Joseph and with a population of 125). This fellow enthusiast had tried to buy it for years and when he finally got his hands on it, started a three year, full frame-off restoration! Upon removing the body, it was determined to be in splendid condition, a testament to the car’s winter storage, and was reassembled and painted in a fresh coat of Raleigh Blue. All chrome was sent off and redone as well. The interior including rumble-seat was refinished in its original tan leather and a new convertible top was fitted on a restored frame, along with a matching tan boot cover. The interior wood grain throughout the cabin was refinished to appear as new. The original engine was disassembled and completely rebuilt, this time with a 6V alternator replacing the generator. While the radiator was sent off to be recored, the owner decided to install a second brake light, as well as turn signals and new tires. In addition, the trunk was added at this time; it is a period Taylor Made piece with full locking luggage set.
Upon completion, the second owner decided to go touring. It was not an uncommon sight at local and regional shows and cruises, particularly the AACA and VMCCA Glidden events. It is said that 20, 000+ miles have been driven since the restoration and the car continues to start, run, drive, shift and stop like new. The car also racked up a number of trophies at shows; many were regional but the car also received the elusive VMCCA Gold Award of Excellence, which according to the VMCCA requires judging in the 95-100 point range highlighting “appearance, performance and preservation, with emphasis on authenticity.”
Today, we are sure that the next owner of this magnificent Buick will find as much joy as the two previous owners. There were only 933 46Cs built for 1935 and only 15 are known to exist, per the registry. Included with the car is all original sales paperwork including sales order, invoice, title application, registration, original title with original envelope from the Secretary of State in Jefferson City, original owner’s manual, original shop manual, service policy, tire and battery warranties and inspection reports, and receipts of registrations, fees, taxes and insurance. Also included with the car is a never-used leather key fob of Mr. Lacy’s, a Buick hat, one ton jack and tool, boot cover bag, roof frame rail bag, and a pair of 1935 Missouri license plates. The car is in extraordinary condition from front to back, both mechanically and cosmetically. Considering the age, authenticity, documented two-owner provenance and rarity, this 46C is ready for any show or touring event. What makes it even cooler is the fact that this car, since it was specially ordered when new, has never been available for public sale. The odometer shows 88, 480 original miles and is titled off its engine number. We would invite any interested parties to call with additional questions! Thanks for looking!
