If you love Woody’s, as you read on you
will be amazed by the fact that this 1949 Buick Woody Super has accomplished
more in its lifetime then any other Woody that we know of at MissChiTown. As a matter of fact, we can’t think of
many cars that can lay claim to the fact that they have driven around the
world. We think you will be
interested to read what the private seller has to say about this fabulous car
in his own words. This will be a
magnificent find for somebody’s collection or museum.
This could be considered the rarest
American Woody station wagon because of its history of going on the “Around the
round world in 80 days” and “Peking to Paris” rallies. The 1949 Buick Super woody station
wagon’s is one of the largest woody station wagons made in the United States
post-war.
A woody station wagon for all
occasions:
Museum Display
Large eclectic collection.
Focal point at any major car shows
especially those featuring woody vehicles.
This car has original leather interior that is in amazingly good condition, including the front floor mat and the rear cargo area. Amazing original wood on
outside and inside with very minimum discoloration and no rotten wood. The owner purchased the car with 43, 000
and has put about 21, 000 miles on the car while traveling the globe in the
rallies.
One thing you know for sure when a car goes
around the world, (which is roughly 22, 000 miles) and makes the trip without
any major mechanical hitches you know it is going to be a fine running
car. The car is mechanically ready
for another trip around the world. All Rally stickers fully removable.
The color is one of our personal favorite
colors for the 1949 Buick Woody. This may be the only woody station wagon ever to travel around the
world.
The seller has provided in his own words
the following history and facts
about the restoration.
1949 BUICK, MODEL 59, WOODY WAGON HISTORY AND RESTORATION
This 1949 Super Woody was purchased
October 23, 1995 from the second owner. In 1949/1950 the original purchaser could no longer make the payments so
a friend took over payment and I bought this car from the surviving wife. The car was always garaged and
pampered. When purchased by me it
was a complete and running car with 43, 000 miles on the odometer.
After purchase the car underwent a
complete body off restoration. Every component was either replaced with NOS parts or rebuilt by
professionals. The intention was
to prepare the vehicle for participation in international road rallies in
various parts of the world. This car
was selected because of its rust free condition and because it had a standard
transmission, which would be more trouble free under adverse conditions. Because this vehicle was to be
sponsored by Buick Motor Division it was required that the vehicle remain as original as possible.
Drive train: The original engine, clutch, transmission, brakes, and
differential were used. Each was
rebuilt. For example, the
transmission was rebuilt using all NOS gears, shafts, and small parts. The car was converted to a 12 volt and
an alternator was installed with all other parts remaining original. A new radiator was built using the
original top and bottom tanks from the original. A new stainless steel gas tank was built.
Interior: The original red leather interior was covered by seat covers
and these protected the leather and it is in fine condition. The interior wood and headliner are in
excellent condition and the wood has not been refinished. Pictures show that the interior is very
nice. The original front rubber
mat is in place with only some deterioration around the accelerator from
use. The carpet in the cargo area
is all-original and only the piece of carpet between the front and rear seats
has been replaced.
Paint and Chrome: The car was given a complete repaint
and all the chrome that needed replating was done. For example, the door handles were not rechromed as it was
not necessary. The car has been
driven approximately 30, 000 miles since restoration and has driven some of the
most remote parts of the world on gravel and dirt roads. The vehicle has been shipped to four
continents as well. As a result, it has numerous chips and abrasions on the paint and is no longer in show
condition. As the photos show it
is still in very presentable condition. Presently the right rear gravel guard is scratched and there are some
abrasions where the right rear door has been opened and closed. There are two spots on the grill bar
where something caused discoloration.
Glass: All the glass is original and the windshield is not cracked
but has several small marks and chips. I have NOS windshield halves in the original boxes, which go with the
vehicle.
Extras: The vehicle is equipped with a 12-volt system (alternator), a pusher fan in front of the radiator for driving in the Sahara and Gobi
deserts, stainless steel gas tank, electric windshield wipers and fuel pump, push
button starting, and a modern temperature gauge mounted on the dash. The original radio and grille
were removed and a rally meter installed which shows point-to-point distance
and over-all distance. It is
operated with the push button device pictured on the front seat. The original radio and speaker grille
go with the car and can easily be installed if desired. They are both in excellent
condition. The rally meter
is operated by the speedometer cable and if removed a NOS speedo cable comes
with the car to again power the speedometer.
The Owner’s Manual and other papers were
in the glove box and come with the vehicle. Some
original sales literature has been collected which comes with the vehicle.
This vehicle is very road worthy and
carefully restored and road tested for participation in Peking To Paris and
Around The World in Eighty Days Motor Marathon. It is no longer a show condition car but is possibly the
most road worthy and tested 1949 Buick in existence. Any owner would enjoy it.
Remember, all woody’s are
basically custom bodied cars as they use a standard semi-finished chassis, front
and rear fenders, hood and front windshield, to which a custom wood body
station wagon is fitted. 1949
Buicks were very high in detail and wood quality and that is why this
particular Woody with its original wood looks so great. If you are into Woody’s or just want a
sensational Woody for your museum, we can think of nothing finer then this car
that has been to Peking in 1997 followed by the Around the World trip in
2000. We can’t imagine another
collector car that has accomplished so much in its lifetime as this particular
Buick Woody.
