In the 60s, Mitchell promoted what he called the sheer look, a more aerodynamic, shoulderless drop off from a car's windows to its sides. Mitchell gave GM designers the assignment of combining Rolls Royce and Ferrari styling cues to create Buick's classic 1963 Riviera. According to a popular story, Mitchell got the idea for the Riviera in Paris. He had originally envisaged the design for Cadillac Division, as a new La Salle, a baby Cadillac. The Riviera also featured frameless glass in the front doors, giving hardtops an even sleeker look. An encounter with a shark, while skin diving in the Bahamas, inspired Mitchell's Corvette Shark show car, his SS racer and the production 1963 Corvette Stingray. The Riviera was introduced on October 4, 1962, as a 1963 model, with the 325 hp (242 kW) 401 cu in (6.6 l) Nailhead V-8 as the only available engine, fitted with dual exhaust as standard equipment, and the turbine drive the only transmission, at a base price of $4, 333, typical delivered prices with options ran upwards of $5, 000. Total production was deliberately limited to 40, 000 vehicles (in a year that Buick sold 440, 000 units overall) to emphasize its exclusivity and to increase demand.
You are viewing a gorgeous rare color combo 1963 Buick Riviera Two Door Hardtop with only 71500 original miles. The awesome vehicle comes from a private estate and has been owned by one family its entire life. Always kept in a climate controlled facility and rarely driven. This car is nearly 100% original and is an AACA National Senior winner. In 2010 the car was given a light restoration, keeping with the cars originality. This is a First Year Riviera. Documentation included.
The body of this rare gem has never had any rust (California Black Plate Car), the body was stripped and repainted in its original Marlin Blue, The car is laser straight and the paint is deep and reflects like a mirror, the car looks as though it was dipped in paint. The original glass is crystal clear and many thousands of dollars invested in rechroming, chrome is perfect, no pitting whatsoever.
The original Sandalwood interior is in nearly perfect condition and everything works as it should, all of the original gauges work properly as well as the heat, AC and wipers. Best of all the original dash was signed by Bill Mitchell, designer of the 1963 Riviera. I researched cars signed by him and I saw no 63 Riviera's, is this the only one? I was told by the previous owner the car was signed outside a restaurant in the Detroit area in 1974.
This beautiful car still retains its original numbers matching 401 V8 325hp 445 Tq. which was rebuilt as well as the transmission, brakes, suspension and steering. The car runs, drives & stops flawlessly. The underside of this car is as clean as the top. A new set of Radial whitewalls complete the look.
The car is equipped with Power Brakes, A/C, Stereo, Power Steering, Power Trunk Release etc..
I have been collecting cars all of my life and this is the nicest original 63 Riviera I have ever come across! Completely ready to drive, show and enjoy.
