Clean and clear title
For an extra boost in horsepower, keep your eyes open for a Riviera equipped with the GS package in 1971-'73. Utilizing the base 455-cu.in. V-8, cylinder heads with .125-inch oversized valves, a special camshaft, heavy-duty valve springs and a deep sump oil pump all contributed to an increase in horsepower to 330, and torque to 455-lbs.ft. For the 1973 editions, the GS was only a ride and handling package with Positive Traction and a final ratio of 3.23:1
MaxTrac
Hiding under the long, sleek body was a short-lived innovation called MaxTrac, an electronic wheelspin-control system developed by the AC Spark Plug Division. The system consisted of a disc mounted on the left front wheel hub with a sensor that read the speed of the front wheel and a second sensor mounted on the transmission and interconnected with the speedometer drive, a solid-state electronic controller, and an on-off switch. The system was electrically connected to the ignition switch, brake switch, brake lamp, and ignition system. The controller compared the inputs from the two sensors, and intermittently interrupted the ignition system when the driven sensor at the transmission indicated a higher speed than the sensor mounted on the front wheel. It could be switched off to enable rocking of the vehicle if it became stuck. Road & Track wrote, Buick's system uses a black box to sense differences of speed between rear and front wheels: If the rear wheels get over 10 percent faster than the front, the control system modulates engine power by interrupting the ignition. The interruptions were hardly noticeable to any driver
SUSPENSION
Unlike the previous generation of Rivieras, the boattail models sport a new four-link rear suspension, consisting of coil springs as well as upper and lower control arms. This new arrangement was more in line with the rest of the full-size Buick lineup. Up front there was the usual independent suspension with coil springs and upper and lower A-arms. GS editions also utilized the same system, however heavy-duty components such as springs and shocks were used.
