Now for the Description
For the sophisticated car collector the sighting of a 1949
Buick Roadmaster 2-door hardtop convertible is very rare indeed. As most car collectors know the major change
in automotive design post war did not take place until Harley Earl head of all
GM design was able to get his 1949 Buick Roadmaster into production. Yes, all of the different divisions for
General Motors had new body styles but the Buick Roadmaster 2-door hardtop was
considered to be the crème de la crème. Besides this car being a Roadmaster, having
the largest Buick body with largest Buick 8-cylinder engine and also having the
automatic transmission called Dynaflow. It is a 2-door hardtop. In 1949
the 2-door hardtop was considered a revolution in design because it was thought
to look like a hardtop convertible. The
main component of course being that the B-Pillar was non-existent and the front
window and the rear quarter window when abutted together when closed without
any pillars in between. The Roadmaster
of course was known for having four of the decorative air take portals on the
front fender instead of three like the lesser Super.
Keep in mind that
Buick Division had two different bodies that they made for Buick, a long body and
a short body. They had two different
motors that they made one with largest 8-cylinder engine with the most
horsepower and one smaller engine. They used this combination as follows, if
you got a small body with a small motor you got a special, if you got a small
body with a big motor you got a century, if you got a
big body with a small motor they called it a super, if you got the ultimate
combination – the big body with the big motor that was a Roadmaster.
While the Buicks in
1949 of all the different categories have similar looks, the Roadmaster had the
presence of a super large body with the super large engine.
For those that don’t
know it, Harley Earl had two favorite car divisions at General Motors. The first was the LaSalle and the second was
the Buick. When LaSalles were discontinued
post war, as production cars the Buick became his favorite car for design and
experimenting. Thus the 1949 Buick
Roadmaster hardtop convertible was the result.
Take a long hard look
at the beautiful lines and generous chrome trim on this 1949 Buick
Roadmaster. The colors are also special
colors that highlight the hardtop design.
Now when it comes to
provenance, this Buick really is one of the most desirable post war Buicks, this car was also owned by one of the wealthiest women in the United States. She was presented this car by her husband one late December day in 1949. She was overwhelmed and she always gave the car great care and attention.
She loved cars and
horses. Here equestrian estate was not a
hundred acres, not four hundred acres but was four thousand acres. This car was the only car that she cared
about during her lifetime and when she became very old she sold it to one of
her close family friend’s sons, who still has the car. – Making this a 2-owner
car! The private seller has asked
MissChiTown to find a good home for it.
The current owner who was a long time family friend of the original owner felt very honored that the original owner (she was about 84 at the time) chose to sell it to him about 18 years ago. The current owner has continued to maintain the car with kit gloves as the original owner had. The private seller tells us that the engine has a straight eight and automatic Dyna Flow transmission that has been rebuilt. All hydraulic lines were replaced with stainless steel. Private seller has had the car rewired and it no longer has the cotton covered wires. The car has hydraulic powered windows.
The private seller has provided some notes about the car. The private seller has kept the car in good running condition and has done the following over the years that he has owned the car: put white wall tires on the car, re-wired with a safe, updated harness, re-assembled all of the brake parts and cylinders. Repainted the wheels with Dante red, the original option trim color and had the Dynaflow transmission completely rebuilt with new seals. The hydraulic window lines were replaced with stainless tubing to avoid any rust from the fluid.
The VIN number and all numbers match up according to his research. Private seller has a complete set of registrations from 1949. It has been consistently registered and inspected since 1949. The private seller believes that he has all the service and inspection records since 1949. The car has the original IBM glove box copy card from the factory from when the Buick came off the assembly line. She was born on November 3, 1949.
The private seller also tells us that some of the artwork in the various manuals is fantastic. They include Buick's Weather Warden Venti-Heater instruction manual. Also We Drivers is a small book for the Buick with brief discussions for driving skills. The Owner's Guide is in the original sleeve.
Other interesting Buick flyers original to the car are You are going to like Dynaflow along with the Automatic Windshield Washer System. Winning bidder will receive a copy of a historically significant photo taken of the car.
