Datsun Z-Series (1974)

1974
DATSUN 260Z.
Early year model has the slightly
smaller bumpers.
Odometer showing 7, XXX miles, so I am
guessing it is 107, XXX based on written documentation. I have documentation showing this was a
California car - purchased March 25, 1974 from a Datsun dealer in Riverside, California. It moved to Maryland in 2005 with just over 100, 000 miles on it.
From there it came to Texas.
PAINT AND BODY: It appears to have had one repaint. I have receipts from the repaint in 2006
which indicate that the body was “refinished” and repainted. They did a good job except there are three
spots that did not seem to get prepped properly and are bubbling/cracking. Two
are smaller than a dime and one in the center of the hood is about two inches
long. Photos of those areas are included. I do not know if the silver that was
used is identical to the original factory silver.
There is no evidence of accidents, except I was rear-ended while I owned it. That resulted only in a crumpled bumper which I replaced with a NOS
part. No sheet metal was damaged on that
occasion.
I appears that the weatherstripping was
removed during the repaint process. I do
not know if they original weatherstripping was replaced after that or the
now-existing weatherstripping was new after the painting.
There is no evidence of rust or rot on
the body. There is some surface rust on
the exhaust pipe. The undercarriage
photos reveal this. You will find lots
of vehicles on the Internet where the seller has black spray-painted (or
undercoated) the undercarriage to hide rust or rot. This car has none of that
so you can readily see what’s there.
ENGINE/MECHANICAL: I added two 2-BBL Webers (I still have the
original carbs and they go with the car if
the buyer wants them; please make that specific request before the car is
shipped or picked up; your shipper will need to crate the parts), header pipe
and new exhaust. Except for the
underhood light, mechanically everything works on this car. I replaced most of the seals. There is no
evidence of leaks on the garage floor. The car has power brakes (disc front / drum rear) but does not
have power steering. The air
conditioning, I think, was a dealer-installed option. It does work (blows cold), unlike a lot of
older cars. I converted it to R134. The
car shifts correctly (clutch and shifter) and I have receipts for all work on
the clutch. Starting when cold is
typical of this era of cars – you need to use the choke and pump the gas
appropriately. I use Carb Defender to counter the effects of
the crappy gas we have to use.
INTERIOR: It is a good driver-quality car. The original interior shows wear with a split
in the seat upholstery. The dash is crack-free. I would replace the carpet (frayed) and leave the rest as-is to keep it
as original as possible. All of the instruments on the dash work. The radio works.
SUSPENSION: I replaced most of the
rubber bushings and various small suspension parts (see photos) and most of the
seals. The wheels and tires were replaced last year.
HISTORY OF THE CAR: I have the original owner’s manual, the
warranty card, and many maintenance records dating back to the mid-70’s. I do
not know if they are comprehensive but there are a lot of them.
I have a complete ownership history
dating back to the original purchaser. I
do not know if this is a “matching numbers” car as I don’t know how to
authenticate that. However, my mechanic
asserts that the engine appears to have never been out of the car.
I am a car enthusiast and took very good
care of this car while I had it. Never
in the rain while I owned it and always in my climate-controlled garage.
I spent a lot of money making everything
mechanically right on this car. I have
receipts for all of the work I had performed on the car during my ownership. I
have personally spent nearly $10, 000 (not including the price of the car)
making the car mechanically right. It is
easy to find inexpensive classic cars on the Internet and then spend many
thousands of dollars making them right after purchase. Except for the few issues I disclosed above, I
did everything that needed to be done already. My reserve is considerably less than I have in it.
Questions were asked about
emissions. Texas does not require
emissions testing on cars older than 25 years. I do not know if this vehicle will pass emissions tests in other states.
SHIPPING: I will deliver the car to a
purchaser or a pickup location for shipping within a 25 mile radius of Austin, Texas. Shipping will need to be arranged
by the purchaser. Shipping to
destinations within or out of the continental US must be arranged by the
purchaser prior to such delivery.
