For Sale is a 1948 Desoto Custom Limousine. I bought the Desoto from a woman in Pennsylvania who's husband bought the car in 1981 from a local funeral parlor. He drove the car home and parked it in his barn and there it sat there until 6 months ago when I towed it out.
I brought the car home and filled the cylinders with oil and got it freed up. The gas tank was cleaned, new fuel pump, spark plugs, coil and ignition wires were installed. I replaced all the wheel cylinders, front brake shoes, front rubber brake lines, and necessary steel lines. The brake drums were turned.
The car runs, drives, and stops very good, the fluid drive transmission works well. I've driven the car around the yard and up and down the street a few times. The shifter was frozen but I got it freed up, it goes into all gears easily except 1st, I think it's still rust on the linkage. With the fluid drive you put it in 3rd and drive away, you don't even need the clutch when you stop.The tires are old and a little dry rotted but do hold air.
The car is very solid and complete. There's no rot in the floors, trunk floor, frame or body other than two small spots inside the rear doors under the rubber sills. (see picture). there is surface rust coming through the paint on the body, the roof and hood have some surface rust where there were large piles of bird droppings.
The car was parked close to a wooden outside wall in the barn, so dampness got to the rear passanger side of the back seat, door panel and the rear corner of the headliner. Other than that, the other 3 door panels, front seat and jump seats are in good shape. The dash is very nice. The speedometer and gauges all seem to work, even the spot light works. The radio lights up but doesn't play.
