The business coupe was a necessary tool during a simpler America. The salesman needed a large trunk to carry goods city-to-city and door-to-door. Today the long hood and long rear deck not only remind us of a different era, but they also have one of the most attractive silhouettes for collectors. And on a DeSoto, it's a true first-class design. Just look at the trim line that starts just behind the wind-swept hood ornament. It runs uninterrupted until it finishes highlighting the curve of the rear fender. It's the perfect representation of true classic style and a body that has been treated with respect for decades. The detail work is terrific, too. Up front, there's dual waterfall grilles, and the bumper helps emphasize the crisp point that leads the way. The sleek profile is accented by the way the modern clearcoat blue reflects the sunlight. And in the rear, the red streaks in the taillight trim are continued down the bumper. All of this, and a lot more thoughtful details, really convey how much time, effort, and money went into restoring this DeSoto.
Inside is more vintage premium flair. The blue striped cloth with tan inserts and pipping has timeless appeal, especially when finished to such a high level. And once again, the detail work is done well with comfortable upgrades like the leather-wrapped armrest and custom cup holders that fit in with the rest of the dashboard's Art Deco design. The artful steering wheel has the proper DeSoto center cap, and beyond that, the original gauges are all working correctly. Business coupes were the original choice for moonshines, because the big trunk could carry all that cargo. So these were the first to get the real hot rod treatment, and this coupe celebrates that history. The correct-style Chrysler flat-six was bored and stroked to 277 cubic-inches total. And it has been dressed for showing off with a red aluminum Offenhauser-style head. There are also nice practical upgrades like an alternator and Optima red top battery. Plus, underneath the large and bright air intake are dual Carter carbs. The performance camshaft and custom machined main bearings with larger oil passages are a few of the thoughtful details. This enhanced motor also exhales better thanks to a proper split manifold to create a true dual exhaust. You have full control over this unique powerplant thanks to the column-shifted three-speed fluid drive transmission. And since the rear end has both a limited slip and overdrive gear, this classic is a true cruiser.
