This is a NO RESERVE auction for a rare 1946 DeSoto Custom Convertible project car in need of a full restoration. The car is mostly complete, and has the original 6 cylinder engine and Fluid Drive transmission. The car comes with a clear California title in my name. Actual mileage is unknown.
I bought this car 7 years ago in Wyoming from the estate of a Mopar collector. It appears to have last been registered around 1962 judging from the date on the front license plate. The car sat outside in the weather in Wyoming for many many years. It appears that the prior owner started to work on the car, but did not get far. Some components have been loosened or removed. For example, the engine head bolts, front engine mounts, and radiator are all loose. The generator, transmission, and drive shaft have been removed but will be placed in the trunk if you want them. There are a few additional parts (pictured) which include a pair of rare and very valuable correct convertible visors.
For the most part, the body appears to be solid and straight. There's lots of surface rust, but cancer (rust holes) appears to be limited to the rear floor pan (see pic), a couple of spots along the bottom of each door, and an area in the left side of the trunk (see pic). Seats and trunk mat were removed to show these areas in the photos. Other than a large dent in the trunk lid (see pic), the body is straight with just a few small dings such as the one in the right rear fender (see pic).
All of the windows are there, but the only window I have attempted to operate is the driver's door (see pic). The convertible top components including switch, cylinders, and motors appear to be there. The car does have the optional Lucite lighted hood ornament, but the small light bracket and socket are missing. The radio antenna hole in the body has been filled.
I do not know if the engine turns, but I doubt it. If you want a spare complete correct S-11 DeSoto engine with the car, one is available to the winning bidder at no charge that does turn freely (pic upon request). However, you would need to make your own arrangements to move it. It is sitting in a carport on wood blocks. I have no way to lift it, move it, crate it, or ship it. This would all be up to you.
I have described the car to the best my ability. But I strongly encourage buyers to inspect the car to be satisfied as to its condition prior to bidding. And please ask any questions BEFORE you bid. If you want to speak on the phone or want more photos, then please email me.
TERMS: A $300 deposit is due via Paypal within 48 hours of the end of the auction, and you have a 7 day grace period to inspect the car and pay the full balance. If you find the car not to your liking, I will refund your deposit. Otherwise, the full balance is due within 7 days of the end of the auction, in either cash or wire transfer. After full payment is received, we are willing to store the car for up to 30 days for free. This is an as-is sale with no warranties whatsoever.
Shipping costs and arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer. (Note: Emergency brake is inoperable.) The car is located about 90 miles east of Los Angeles near Hemet, California. Overseas buyers are welcome.
