Rare De Soto Suburban S-11. The Suburban was the top-of-the-line model outfitted for nine passengers and the ability to stow large cargo when the third row seats were folded down.
This car is a highly intact survivor, with a Flathead six-cylinder engine that runs strong at 48, 492 miles. The car is inspected and on the road. The Suburban features a Chrysler innovation called Fluid Drive, which almost entirely eliminates shifting: the gears automatically change from first to second and from third to fourth when your foot briefly lets off the gas pedal.
The interior door panels and the rear storage space are lined in wood. The upholstery, comprised of a plastic called “leatherette” is original and fully intact with the exception of the driver’s seat.
The body is highly intact, with one small hole behind the rear door, driver’s side. The brightwork is in good condition, but a purist may want to re-chrome the bumpers. The car needs a high-quality paint job, floor pans and some interior work where faux wood graining has peeled and corroded. The headliner needs to be replaced.
This car fulfills a variety of goals. Some might drive it as is, others will be satisfied with a more presentable car with fresh paint, while still others will opt for full restoration.
I have receipts for all work done since I purchased the car in 2010. Title is in the form of a NYS transferrable registration.
