Heres my latest build, a 1930 Ford Roadster done in a
traditional-ish style. Henry Ford
roadster body on a heavily modified 1932 frame powered by an early 327, backed
with a T5 5 speed manual transmission. This is a pro built bare steel car with around 2000 miles on it. The car is a great driver that has already
been on a few road trips and I hope will go on many more. Heres the details of the build.
The chassis started out as a 32 frame pinched for a Model A, it was built by Gary Maxwell at Blackboard Hot Rods. I moved the front crossmember back 3” and
pinched the front rails to the width of a 32 grill shell. The front spring is mpounted off a pair of
early Ford wishbones while the front axle is a dropped original Model A from
Okie Joe. Steering is handled with a
Vega box, theres also F1 shock mounts, a panhard bar and So Cal front shocks. In the rear I decided to go with an
adkustable quarter elipse setup, its all custom made. Theres a pair of Pete & Jakes ladder bars
and the rear show mounts are So Cal lowers and heavily modified Walden Speed
Shop uppers. The rear axle is a narrowed
9 inch Ford with 5 on 5 ½ axles and 3.25
gears in an open carrier. Front brakes
are ’46-48 Ford and rears are also Ford, everything is new or totally
redone. All the plumbing is new and done
right with 3/16 steel lines with residual valves for brakes and 3/8 steel lines
for fuel, theres a Wilwood master cylinder for brakes and a canister style fuel
filter with a cast bracket from So Cal.
The motor is an early 327 with 1957 Power Pack heads and
bitchin’ Offenhauser three deuce setup. The Rochester 2 Jets are a real three deuce steup with one carb that
runs the motor and two that are dumps only with no idle circuits or
chokes. I am running the motor only off
the middle carb right now but the others could be hooked up easily. Theres also a really nice Mallory Double Life
Distributor with points in it! The motor
was gone through about 2000 miles ago with new rings, bearings, oil pump, timing set, etc. The heads were done as
well, theres some mile Comp valve springs and a nasty Thumper cam from Comp as
well. The transmission is an S10 T5 that’s
all new as well, it was modified with gear ratios better suited for this
combination.
The body is a real Henry Ford Rodaster and is very
solid. Its been helped with door skins, lower quarter panel patches and a decklid from Brookville. Theres also a Steadfast Engineering subrail
kit in the body as well. I built two
tubular sub structures inside the body from 1” .090 wall DOM, theres a braced
hoop under the dash and a big X style brace that runs from door jamb behind the
seat and under the package tray. The car
has just been clear coated to keep the look without rusting.
Its got a Duvall style windshield from Past Tech and the
dash is from a 1936 Ford. Theres a pair
of Stewart Warner Duplex Gauges from a 1933 Chevrolet for water, fuel, oil and
amps, they all work except the amp guage, which only goes to 20 amps. The speedometer is a Stewart Warner Police
Special and the tach is also period correct Stewart Warner cable drive, the
tach works but the speedo does not.
The seat is a third row seat frame from a Dodge Caravan that
I modified to work in this car, it was re-foamed and covered in tobacco colored
vinyl. Pedals are from Walden Speed Shop
and were heavily modified to work in this application, the clutch is mechanical
and works great. No Leaks! No bleeding!
The entire car was wired from scratch front to rear and
everything works. I left extra circuits
under the dash in the event that the new owner wants to add neon lighting or
air conditioning. But please, don’t add
neon lighting or air conditioning.
Theres a thousand other hand built parts on this car from
the clutch linkage to the headlight bar to the radiator, please look at the
photos.
Overall the car drives great, I have taken it on two
extended freeway excursions (over 300 miles) with no issues. Ive also driven the car pretty much daily for
the last six weeks or so, I have a 35 mile round trip commute and its never
left me anywhere. It pulls smoothly from
1500 in fifth gear and sounds really radical at idle with the big Thumper
cam. Off idle it runs smooth, how do
they do that? It drives straight and
does not bump steer, pull or do anything weird. The suspension is incredibly compliant and I have become a huge fan of
quarter eliptic rear suspension. Works
so, so much better than a buggy spring out back. The bias ply tires make you pay attention but
they sure look great! It does not run
hot, ever! Even stuck in
oh-my-god-please-kill-me-now LA traffic it never goes above 190.
This is an excellent opportunity to buy a pro built hot rod that’s
done right and works well. Theres no
waiting and my reserve is far below what any reputable shop would charge to
build a car like this. Its got the look
and is ready to drive to your next local cruise, right now. Take your time and finish it out or leave it
as is, either way it’s a smoking deal. This car is titles as a 1930 Ford Roadster.
I welcome international bidders. Vehicle sold as is with no warranty expressed
or implied. Feel free to call me at
631-379-6806 with any questions or to arrange an appointment to view the car. Thanks and happy bidding!
