International Harvester Travelall (1968)

Price: US $3,500.00
Up for auction is my 3 Owner 1968 International
Travelall. On the surface the Travelall
appears to be your typical, everyday Travelall. Nothing could be further from the truth! This is NOT your Grandpa’s Corn Binder!
On October 11th, 1968 Mr. James Perkins took
delivery of this International Travelall from Bisio Motors in Portland, Oregon (see
photos of Owners Service Policy). For
the next 30+ years the Travelall tirelessly served the Perkins family in the
great Northwest! In the late 90s the
Perkins family sold the Travelall to an Industrial mechanic from Santa Barbara, California.
Once in California the transformation of the Travelall
began. The underpowered 345 V-8 was
removed and a fresh 392 V-8 took its place, the original 4 speed transmission
was upgraded to a T34 Five speed overdrive, the front drum brakes were swapped
out for late model Ford Bronco discs, heavy duty sway bars and rear dual shocks
were added and any panel or part that had any sign of rust was replaced with
rust free California metal. And last, the Travelall was treated to a tasteful
color change!. The end result, a 1968 Travelall
that would out pull any late model Suburban, drove like a dream, stopped on a
dime, but was still an International thru and thru! And most importantly was
just flat cool!
The Travelall spent
the next 16 years in Santa Barbara. When
not in Santa Barbara it and an Airstream trailer were exploring the highways
and bi-ways throughout the United States. It was reliable, it was comfortable and it was cool!
Fast forward to 2015 when my wife and I began our search for
a vintage trailer and unique tow rig. As
luck would have it I stumbled upon this 1968 Travelall. It fit the bill perfectly and we bought it. Owner #3!
Unfortunately finding
the right trailer proved not to be as simple and as time passed our enthusiasm
dwindled and life plans changed. With a
stable full of other vintage vehicles and the main reason for purchasing the
Travelall now just a dream gone by we have decided to put it up for sale. This truly is a one of a kind rig. If you are in the market for a Travelall this
is one to consider!
The interior on this rig is clean and well sorted. The floorboards are still covered with the
original style rubber floor mat. The mat
is in nice shape but is showing light wear and does have some minor tears here
and there. The seats and door panels
have been redone and are in great shape but not original (I do have three
original door panels that will be sold with the vehicle). The headliner is in good condition with 3 to
4 minor flaws in the vinyl. And last, the dash pad is in good shape but does have a couple small cracks (all hidden
under a custom made dash cover).
As for the body, paint and trim, unbelievably nice. The doors close nicely, the body lines are
straight and there are no dings, bumps or bruises. The paint looks great but does have little
chips here and there. If you look
closely you will find signs of the paint’s age yet even up close it looks
great! As far as paint and body quality, I would rate it a #3 (typical of what you say at your local car show or cruise
night).
Electrical, instrumentation and accessories are all good and
in working order. The Travelall was
equipped from the factory with air conditioning which is intact and fully
functional (how often do you see that). All gauges work and are in nice condition. The speedometer does act a little erratic at
highway speeds from time to time (it may be time for a cable lube or new cable). The Travelall is equipped with a Pioneer
AM/FM CD stereo for your entertainment on those long trips or day cruises!
Mechanically, where do I start! Industrial grade 392 V-8 4 BBL with matched
and modified heads (stellite valve seats and sodium filled valves), meshed timing gears (no chains), modified
lubricating system (that keeps the trans oil up over the main shaft), MSD
ignition, Ford Duraspark electronic ignition, manual timing control system that
allows the timing to be adjusted while driving (disconnected at the moment), T34
Five speed overdrive transmission, front disc brakes, dual rear shock set-up
(currently running one shock on each side due to no recent tow duty), heavy
duty sway bars, heavy duty clutch and on and on. The running gear on this rig is the real deal
and could run for well over 400, 000 miles with regular maint. (Since restore
the Travelall has run Mystik heavy duty synthetic oil exclusively).
If you are in search of that ultimate ski rig for those
winter adventures to Stowe, Mammoth, Vail or Jackson Hole or just want the
perfect surf wagon for those sunny days in Santa Cruz, Santa Monica, Hilton
Head or The Hamptons this International Travelall is the ultimate rig for you!
