Low Mileage
Restoration over Rust Free Arizona Original!
We’re
selling this beautiful Scout for its owner, who oversaw its expensive
restoration in 2009, which included a thorough mechanical rebuild and a bare metal
repaint. It was a labor of love, and a nostalgic project to recapture memories
of the Scout he rode in with his Dad and Grandad when he was a kid. The Scout
was completed in time to be used in their daughter’s wedding, and since then it
has barely been driven, and has seen neither rain nor snow. The entire vehicle
looks as fresh as when it was brought home from the restoration shop.
The opening
bid (no reserve) represents less than half of the owner’s full investment.
It would be impossible to reproduce this
vehicle for this opening bid price unless you started with a rust-free original
and did all the work at home yourself. Copies of some of the receipts are
included on the photo link below, so you can review the detail and see exactly
what was done, what parts were used, and how much labor went into the
restoration.
This
Scout has the larger IH 345 V8 and 4-wheel drive, and decoding the VIN
indicates this to be the original spec for this truck. It starts right up, idles smoothly, and goes down the road like a dream. The paint is gorgeous, and
the interior is fresh looking. The mileage on the odo is believed to be
accurate, but cannot be substantiated – in any case, it drives as well as it
did forty-two years ago.
Flaws
are very few: The fuel gauge is somewhat inaccurate, and the speedo jumps a little, smoothing out some at higher speeds. The hardtop was cut-down in length to suit the
owner’s preference, and is a little crudely finished; it covers only the front seat now and appears to be not fully
close at the rear. There is some slight scuffing on the paint in the tailgate;
those are the only marks I could see on the paint other than some splattered
bugs on the front.
This
Scout is especially impressive underneath, where it still looks super clean
from the restoration. The only signs of corrosion underneath are slight traces
of normal surface rust, and by any sane definition this truck is rust free. The
wheel arches and sills are original steel with no patches or filler. The body
is amazingly straight: Because most of these 4x4 trucks got worked hard in life, very few of the survivors still have panel fit like this. Likewise, the panel
surfaces are as perfect as can be: Look at the continuity of image reflections
across panels…The fit and finish are probably better than when it left the
factory, and it looks truly magnificent.
The
only thing missing is a weatherproof top to cover the rear; either a full
hardtop or soft top would be desirable unless it’s driven only on sunny days.
Any other flaws come down to very minor details. Our opinion is that the opening bid price represents a real bargain.
