My Scout’s
Story: I originally purchased my Scout
in 2003. I am not sure how many owners
it had before me, but it was in nice shape and came from Utah. Since that time, I have undertaken many
upgrades to make it more powerful, more reliable, and have better drivability
and fuel economy. I am selling it
because I don’t have the time to enjoy it the way I used to. This Scout is so much fun to drive and draws attention wherever it goes.
The
Drivetrain is out of a 1997 Dodge ¾ ton truck. It has a 12 valve Cummins 5.9 liter turbo diesel engine that starts
right up and runs strong. I am not sure
of the mileage as the gauge cluster in the truck it came out of did not
work. It runs way stronger than any of
the other Cummins 12 valves that I have driven, so I imagine that it has been
rebuilt at some point, but I cannot prove that. It is mated to a NV4500 5 speed manual transmission. It shifts into 4 wheel drive flawlessly. The suspension is stock Dodge springs with
Bilstein shocks all the way around. It
has a Dana 60 front axle and a Dana 80 rear axle. The tires are 35” and are on Hummer H2
aluminum wheels. They have approximately
90% tread left on them. The Scout is very easy to drive and averages 22mpg mixed and gets
25mpg on the highway.
The major
part of the renovation was completed at the end of 2012. To facilitate the ease of making the Dodge
drivetrain work with the Scout, the Scout Traveler body was put on to the Dodge
frame. All of the work was done at a
professional shop in the Orlando area. At the time of the renovation, there were some rust issues that I had
addressed. In order to make sure those
issues did not come back, the hood, windshield frame, and both doors were
replaced with fiberglass components by Kentrol. To this day, they all look great, however, the doors should be adjusted, as they have always sagged a little. There is some minor rust starting to show on the drivers side front
quarter panel at the bottom where it meets the front door, as well as a few minor
spots under a few of the fenders. The floors and bed have all
been covered with spray in bed liner and are solid with 3 exceptions that I
have seen. There is a small spot on each
of the foot wells that are each between one and two inches in size. The other area is where the bed meets the
floor just behind the rear seat, and it is rusted across the bottom, but should
be an easy fix from underneath. The body
is accented with a padded rollbar with 3-point seatbelts installed on both
front seats. It also has D&C Extreme
3/8” steel nerf bars that have been welded to the frame.
The interior
door panels have been professionally painted gloss black and match the dash
pad. At the time of the major
renovation, the original gauge cluster was removed and has been replaced with a
brushed aluminum dash with a full compliment of Autometer analog gauges. These gauges are in place, but have not yet
been hooked up to the engine. There is a
gauge cluster out of a Dodge that has been wired in and sits on the console
just under the A/C vents. The stock
wiring harness has been removed and replaced with a Painless Wiring
Harness. The headlights have been
upgraded to a HID H4 system and light up the road and everything else in front
of you. The A/C is super cold and will
keep you cool in even the hottest weather. At this time, there is no radio, but there is a place for one in the
Tuffy locking center console. Also, to
make wiring the radio easier, wiring has been put in place under the spray in
bed liner. The seats are grey cloth and
are out of a Ford, I think. They are in
ok condition, but if I were going to keep my Scout for any length of time, I
would get around to replacing them with black vinyl or leather seats to match
the rest of the interior. The seats are
mounted on custom seat bases that have storage compartments in them.

“Major restoration was completed at the end of 2012. There are many minor details that need to be finished in order to make this a perfectly/completely restored vehicle. It is a great daily driver and I have averaged somewhere between 25 and 100 miles per week since the restoration and it has not let me down.” |
