International Harvester Other (1936)
for sale

Price: US $200.00

Description:

When this sturdy, well-designed pickup rolled off the assembly line in 1936, it was way ahead of its time. It possessed 4-wheel hydraulic brakes, reliable inline 6 cylinder engine, a synchronized 3-speed on the floor transmission (no more double clutching!), an open drive shaft, a steel roof, and a larger cab than Ford or Chevy. It soon became the favorite utility vehicle for farmers and tradesmen.
This truck has spent its entire well cared for life in Pennsylvania. It was bought new by a seed and feed mill store near Hereford PA. for occasional deliveries. It was a common sight in the countryside until it was replaced in 1959. It was then purchased by a local farmer to haul supplies out to his farm, and later to haul his grandkids around in local parades. Finally, it sat neglected in his barn for the last 15 years until I purchased the truck from him in 2013.
I began a restoration of the mechanicals, rebuilding the hydraulic brake system with new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, springs and shoes. While the wheels were off, I replaced all the wheel bearings and seals. I opened the transmission and rear-end and found everything to be in order, turning smoothly with no chips or cracks in any of the gears. I had the radiator cleaned out, removed 80 years of sludge from the engine coolant passages, and rebuilt the original water pump. I rebuilt the original carburetor and replaced the regulator, coil, points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, spark plug wires and plugs. The engine starts immediately at the touch of the starter. The temperature stays between 180 and 190 degrees no matter what the outside temperature. Today I drove it for a couple of hours at 90 degrees and it never climbed above 185. The temperature gauge and amp meter work properly. The speedometer needle jumps around. I think it is a loose connection. The new fuel tank has no sender installed, so the fuel gauge does not work.
The C-1 has all new wiring from Rhode Island Wiring including new 2-0 battery cables for the 6-volt positive ground new battery. Concerned about safety in modern traffic, I added small guide lights on the fenders and an extra taillight so that the car could have turn signals and stop lights. The turn signals are the only non-stock feature on the truck.
I was about to begin a restoration of the body, but illness and financial realities are forcing a sale. I tried to show the condition of the body as best I could in the pictures. It has 80 years of dings and dents with some amateur (not mine) bodywork on the cab corners and passenger door. The rear fenders were missing when I bought it. They were probably sacrificed for some utility trailer long ago. I replaced the fenders with new steel ’36 Ford rear pickup fenders. The Ford fenders’ shape and edge bead is indistinguishable from International fenders, but they will still need some additional fitting at the running boards. The only rust through on the body that I can find is a small area at the cab end of the pickup box. The front and rear glass is safety glass. Both side windows are cracked, but they can be used as patterns. The flat safety glass is easy and inexpensive to have fabricated at local glass suppliers.
It is a fun truck to drive that always draws a crowd wherever we go. The reliable engine, synchronized transmission, roomier cab and hydraulic brakes make it easy to drive.
There is a very active, friendly “Old International Harvester Forum (OLDIHC)” on the internet that is a wonderful source for information and partnership with people who appreciate old “Binders” like this one.
I believe I have described the truck accurately, but as always, the sale is “as is” with no warranty.
Make this show-stopper yours. You will enjoy it as much as I have!
Check out the test drive video, and these do not often come on the market, and there is a LOW RESERVE so bid to WIN!
Good luck!
Dwight
