History
I Purchased this Scout in `2010 with the intention of making it a Rubicon ready resto-mod that retained its classic look. At purchase it had a freshly rebuilt 196CID engine and was completely factory stock, looking more like a station wagon. Fortunately, along with the sale also came another parts Scout that had an original Scout Rancho 4 leaf lift, a boxed 2 body lift, brand new Cooper Discoverer S/T tires, and a box set of 4:10 posi Yukon Gears. After assembling all of the parts in the back of the Scout, which I personally plated BLUROC1, I had both DANA 44 axels rebuilt with the Yukon gears at a local gear shop where they installed a new heavy duty drag link and aligned the steering after installing the rebuilt axels on the rebuilt Scout Rancho 4 leaf lift and raising the body on the 2 body lift kit which was put on new Cooper 33's. Then I took BLUROC1 to a local speed shop to have the Holley 1920 One Barrel Carb rejetted and rebuilt, had them rewire the ignition, rebuild the distributor and install a Petronix electronic ignition. At this point the rebuilt and lifted drive train and T-18 4-speed performs as optimally as any stock Scout with a 196CID could and I have all the receipts from the work done so far.
My ultimate goal with the BLUROC1 project was to restore the body/interior to exceptional condition, make further suspension improvements, and professionally install a Cummins Performance 4BT from ACD Engines in Utah. BLUROC1 being a 1975 model year makes it painless to do an engine swap as 1975 is the last year of unrestricted vehicles that do not need to be smogged nor are there any restrictions on swapping motors for vehicles of this vintage and older. This Scout is in prime condition to make your own stock restoration or follow my train toward a trail ready diesel resto-mod. Another project I am currently working on is in greater need of funds so please bid freely and break through my reserve to own a rarely found performance stock Scout II XLC.
Condition
Body: Body has usual rust lovingly called by Scout fans factory rust in the normal spots around the wheel arches, rear corners, kick panels, and rear apron. The doors, tailgate, top, lift gate, floor, and undercarriage are all rust free with the exception of the rear apron of the bed as it meets the tailgate which has moderate but not unusual rust. All signal lights, marker lamps, headlights and interior lights work as they should with the exception of the fuel and voltmeter gauge lights having ceased to operate so that those two gauges are difficult to see at night.
Interior: Interior is in good to exceptional stock condition for its vintage. Headliner is intact and as new with dome lights that function properly from the headlight switch (door switch is rusted and makes no contact) and there is a nice map light operated from a dash toggle switch that might have been a factory option. The seats are mostly in original condition with the exception of a small tear on the back of the passenger seat and a tear under the drivers side of the front bench seat that is covered by a very comfortable bamboo bench seat cover. And the floor mats are original and in good condition having regular scuffing with the exception of the driver's foot well area which cracked significantly when taken up to do the adjustment work after the lift was installed.
Engine: The engine was in good running condition when I purchased the vehicle with the previous owner having done an in-frame ring and piston replacement and a head job, finishing in full repaint of engine. After purchase I rebuilt and rejetted the carb, completely rebuilt the distributor and added a Petronix electronic ignition, and installed a new high-output alternator. All engine and fuel systems appear to be working properly at this time and since the BLUROC1 project has been idle for about a year, I have run the Scout every week and done regular maintenance.
Running Gear: Behind a strengthened 196CID engine is mated a Borg Warner T-18 4-speed manual transmission/transfer case which operates perfectly in all gears; high, low, 4wd. The DANA 44 front and rear axels were professionally rebuilt about 7k miles ago with Yukon posi 4:10 gears and all new rear drum and front disc brakes. And with Cooper 33 tires, the combined drive ratio appears optimum for this engine and drive train, giving a top cruising speed of 65mph on the freeway and great low end gearing when on the trail.
