You don't come
across these very often, a clean 1972 IH Scout II that is in very good
condition, nearly rust free and straight. I purchased this vehicle about 2 years ago in the dry climate of
southwest New Mexico, near the Arizona border. The fellow I purchased from had purchased the
Scout from an 80 yr old who was either the first or second owner. Mileage @ 85K was told to be exact and have
no reason to doubt this seeing its condition and strength of the engine.
This Scout has
a 345 with an A727 three speed automatic. When I purchased, the transmission was slipping and after the shop
diagnosed that the 40+ yr old seals were beginning to harden and fall apart, a
complete rebuild was in order. This was
completed Aug 2015. In addition to the
rebuild, a Transgo TF-2 Reprogramming Kit (shift kit) was installed which
provides clean, quick shifts. The
gearing is 3.73 with a Dana 44 with power lok (RA-28) in rear and Dana 30 (FA-13)
in front with Lock O Matic hubs and a Dana 20 transfer case. Although I have not had the chance to take
off road, the 4 wheel drive system functions properly and is tight.
The tires are WildCat
EXT Radial LT with excellent aggressive tread and a spare that’s never seen the
road (235/85 R16). The wheels are 16 inch white spokes which includes a new
never used spare. Although difficult to
see with larger tires it does have shackle lift.
The Scout
originally came with an AC and the bracket is still there but the compressor is
not.
After market
equipment include heavy duty front and rear bumpers, fog lights, roof mounted auxiliary
flood lights, rear backup flood light, front gas shocks, steering damper, Weber/Edelbrock
600 4 barrel carburetor, front bucket seats, Grant GT steering wheel, Sony
AM/FM CD, dual exhaust (older).
List of the new
or rebuild items recently completed are:
Rebuilt
: A727 transmission, Weber carburetor, radiator (tanked, inspected and cleaned)
New
: battery, fuel pump, coil, distributor cap, points and
condenser, spark plugs and wires, ballast resistor, master cylinder, brake booster, rear shocks, choke
cable, rear brake shoes.
Items that I
would still like to complete/fix if I had the time are: front alignment, power
steering leak, brake wheel cylinders (even after new brake booster and MC, brakes still to stiff so they are suspect), front brake shoes.
As seen in
photos, the floors and rocker panels are solid, there is a tiny ding in rear
lift gate and a few areas where rust is starting to poke through. These include some minor bubbling on both
rear fenders and the passenger side body mount. Other then these areas, the vehicle is extremely straight.
The vehicle
drives well although is in need of an alignment because it does tend to follow
grooves in road. The engine starts and
idles perfectly and has plenty of get up and go. It does occasionally smoke at start up so I
suspect a possible head rebuild down the road. The newly rebuilt transmission shifts tight and strong but is not
overpowering. The dual exhaust system
sounds good but is not overly loud. All doors including hood and tail gate shut
tight and solid.
My starting and
reserve price is low considering what this vehicle is or can be worth and what
I’m seeing what these vehicles are getting when completely restored.
