Description:

Great find for Jeep enthusiasts! 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited, Flame/Poppy Red with Agate (gray) Leather Interior with only 76k original miles, kept in original condition. If you've been looking around at square body Cherokees, you know it's getting much harder to find nice ones that are completely stock with no modifications. I am a long-time Jeep Cherokee and Comanche enthusiast. After much searching, I purchased this Cherokee last year from the original owner who was a long-time mechanic at a Jeep dealership. He was very meticulous and kept track of everything ever done to the Jeep from fluid changes to repairs in a log book. Overall, this Cherokee is in very nice condition and will provide the new owner with many more miles of enjoyment. It runs and drives great and everything works as it should. When I had it inspected last year, my mechanic summed it up best - well, it runs like a Jeep, stops like a Jeep and turns like a Jeep!.
Mechanical:
This Jeep is in excellent mechanical condition and needs nothing. The PA state inspection is good through 12/15. The classic 4.0 liter, inline 6 cylidner engine runs very well, starts up right away and makes no strange noises. The AW4 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and displays no issues. The Selec-Trac four-wheel drive system engages/disengages properly (this does have the M-242 Selec-Trac transfer case that has 2wd High, 4wd Part Time, 4wd Full Time High and 4wd Full Time Low). The battery is not quite 3 years old and cranks fine even on last winter's -25 degree days. The brakes, suspension and exhaust are all in good shape and have plenty of life left in them. The Goodyear Fortera tires are about 2/3rds worn. They still have several thousand more miles left in them although I would probably replace them at the beginning of next winter if running the Jeep in the snow. I always address any issues as they arise so I recently replaced the thermostat and just installed a brand new starter.
Interior:
The interior is in excellent condition. Since it is a Limited, it has Agate (gray) leather interior with a power driver's seat and overhead console with the multi-function computer (shows mpg, outside temperature, trip data, etc...). There is one small tear on side of driver's seat bottom cushion (shown in pictures). The headliner has one small tear over the cargo area that is about the size of pencil eraser and is hardly noticeable. Otherwise, the headliner is in perfect condition with no sagging or stains. The vehicle was never smoked in. In fact, I bought two similar Cherokees back when they were new and when I first drove this Cherokee it smelled just like I remembered!
Body:
The body on this Cherokee is in really nice shape overall. The Flame Red paint looks great and has a very nice shine. There are just a few really minor scuff marks on the front and rear bumpers from normal wear. There is almost no rust visible on the outside of the body. From the outside the Jeep really looks great and draws a lot of positive comments whenever I drive it. The chrome grill, body colored mouldings and 16 alloy wheels really make this Limited stand out from the much more common Cherokee Sports.
The bottoms of the doors and rocker panels were starting to get the trademark Cherokee rust. The previous owner cleaned up the rocker panels and painted them. They appear to have been repaired correctly and are solid. From the outside there is a small bit of surface rust starting to show through the paint toward the back of the driver's side rocker. If you open the rear doors, you can also see there are surface rust spots on each side in the typical spots (along the seams where the rocker panel is welded to the inner quarter panel and at the bottom of the B-pillar and by the plastic vent). These spots are just surface rust and can easily be cleaned up, treated and painted. I've tried to capture all of this as best as possible in the attached pictures. The lighter red spots along the inside of the rocker panels in the photos are where some of the touch up paint the previous owner sprayed is starting to peel off.
The bottoms of the doors will need attention. The previous owner had put some rust preventer on the inside bottoms of all four doors and covered them with undercoating to try to stop the rust. The passenger side front door and both rear doors appear worse in the pictures than they are. They have not rusted through the inner lip of the door skin that folds over. The inner lower sections of those three doors can easily be cleaned up with a wire wheel, treated with rust preventer/stabilizer and painted. The driver's side door will need more attention. It was not caught in time so the inner lip of the door skin and lower inner section of the door have rusted through in spots. This door could probably be saved with a lower door skin repair panel (several companies make them that go from the door moulding down) and welding some new metal on the inner lower section of the door. The easier/better alternative may be to purchase a rust free southern/western door, which appear to be readily available for a reasonable price, then repaint it and install it.
The undercarriage is very solid, but does show surface rust in spots, which it typical for a vehicle of this age that was driven in the northeast. One of the projects I had planned to do was to clean up any of the rust spots on the undercarriage then paint the underside with POR-15 to stop any future rusting. Once I decided to sell the Jeep, I decided to hold off on doing that. I want the seller to be able to see how things really look on the underside and see that it is solid. I didn't want to put fresh coat of paint on it to make it look like I was trying to hide anything. The only weak spot I've found on the underside is on the driver's side floorboard directly under the driver's left foot. There is a factory hole there with about a 3 plastic plug. One side of that hole has rusted outward an inch or so. One of the attached pictures shows my finger pointing to the weak spot. It would be a very easy fix to clean that area up and fix it since it is an accessible area.
I recently installed new lift gate struts and windshield wipers. The windshield picked up a very small rock chip (smaller than a dime) on the passenger's side over the winter that was repaired by an auto glass installer so it won't spread.
Extras:
Included in the sale are over $1500 worth of new and slightly used OEM parts! The parts include various switches, window regulators, interior pieces, steering wheel, 2 slightly used 16 alloy wheels, tubular side steps, hitch, and more. The previous owner picked up most of these parts whenever the dealership he worked for was reducing their Cherokee parts inventory. I have a detailed spreadsheet listing all of the 40+ items that I'm happy to email to anyone interested. I also have a Yakima bike rack that bolts to the factory roof rack and holds 2 bicycles. The rack is not included with sale, but I would sell it for a very reasonable price if the buyer is interested.
Wrap Up:
I have a clean PA title in my possession. If you take a look at the CarFax for my Cherokee, it will confirm that I'm just the second owner, the mileage is accurate, and it was never involved in any accidents or had reportable damage. I am happy to assist with shipping at my end provided the buyer makes the arrangements and pays the shipping cost.
As I wrote in the beginning of this description, this Cherokee is in really nice condition overall. If you've looked around at many, I'm sure you'll agree. I've tried to describe the Cherokee as accurately as possible. I've pointed out all of the flaws to hopefully give potential buyers a thorough picture of the overall condition of this Jeep. I would definitely encourage anyone who is interested and able to view the Cherokee in person. If that's not possible, I'm certainly willing to answer any questions or provide any additional pictures or descriptions as requested. I hope my Cherokee ends up with a Jeep enthusiast who will continue to maintain and enjoy it for many years and miles to come. Thanks for taking the time to look at my auction, happy bidding!
