I bought this Grand Cherokee a few months back on eBay. I've since bought a Wrangler Unlimited and this vehicle must go. When I bought it, it was advertised as well cared for. I would have to say yes and no. It is a nice rust free Grand but it did have many mechanical issues. I've addressed most of them, but a few still remain.
Lets start with the body and interior. The body is clean with no rust, all the glass is good. Three of the doors open and close as they should. The interior is clean with the only issues being wear on the drivers seat and the shift indicator plate is broken. The rear drivers side door will not open and the window doesn't roll down. It appears the lock is not unlocking. I've tried opening from the inside but no luck. All other doors and rear hatch are functional. It has a functioning moon/sun roof.
The engine compartment. The water pump was leaking when I got home with it. Keep in mind, I drove it 450 miles home with no issues. I replaced the water pump and the electric cooling fan along with the thermostat. There is still a tiny cooling system leak. It drips back toward the firewall. It could be as simple as a leaking hose or fitting or it could be the heater core. The heater core was supposed to have been replaced about a year ago. It is a major job to replace and the blend doors do not work as they should. This along with the fact the A/C does not blow through the proper vents makes me doubt this repair was made. So I would plan on heater core and related parts replacement. The battery is dated 8/14, so it should be good to go.
This car has Quadra Trac II, 3.73 gears with viscous drive differentials. The tires are nearly new B.F. Goodrich All-Terrain KO 305x70x16
Misc: I've replaced the headlights with new units. I have NOT hooked up the halos yet. The right rear tail light has a crack in it. I've added a new steel winch bumper. Its a quality built bumper with built in skid plate to protect the lower radiator support. There is a 9000# SuperWinch mounted on it. This winch appears to have been never used. The cable is perfect. The hood and rear hatch have new gas shocks.
I replaced the front CV axles, hubs and brakes. I replaced the pads on the rear. I also replaced all the tie rod and drag link ends. New axle side bushing in track bar.
The suspension is a older version Rock Krawler 6.5 long arm. It works great with lots of flex. There are two lower long arms in the front with one upper control arm. Basically a three link. The rear has two lower and two upper control arms. All arms are adjustable. These arms need to be rebuilt. It feels like its bottoming out because of the slack in the flex joints. If I was to keep this vehicle I would buy the Iron Rock, Iron Y replacement long arms for the front along with new 6.5 coils. The great thing about these arms is they're fixed and the caster can be set and no further adjustments are needed. The rear seems to be OK.
This GC is fast, shifts as it should and goes down the road. There is a class 3 hitch on the back. There is also a hydraulic step on the drivers side front. I'm not real sure why and its kinda cool, but honestly I would probably remove it if I was going to keep the car. Its a high dollar pump and cylinder that I would sell.
So to sum up. The suspension needs some work, around $700-$800 if you replace the arms and coils. The cooling system issues will need to be addressed. Even with the leaking water pump when I bought it, I still drove it 450 miles home with no issues. I think the core is about $45 dollars and the blend doors are usually minimal cost. Its the removal of the dash to get at all this stuff that scares most people. The truth is, its a long day or maybe 2 days at most job. Time consuming more than anything. There's a video on YouTube that shows the complete job. I can't guarantee it, but I believe these two items will make this into one great off road ride
