1998 Jeep
Grand Cherokee 5.9
I have had this Jeep for nearly 10 years. I’ve spent a fortune on it over that
time. I’ve used it, and now it’s time to
let it go. I have other interests these
days and I rarely go off road anymore. It just sits most of the
time. It's not so pretty anymore, but she still works and works well.
This Jeep is street legal and you can drive it
anywhere and use it for a daily driver if you want. However I do not recommend it. It’s
more machine than Jeep anymore. More
suited to off roading than anything else. It's loud, it roars, it sways like a boat and drives like a John Deere tractor. And it goes like H... when you stomp on the skinny pedal. But, if you wanted to, you could drive it across the country
tomorrow. If you don’t know about Jeeps, and about Mopar performance engines, this is probably not the Jeep for you. Unless you know what these are all about I seriously advise you to come look and drive
it first.
So, the good, the bad, and the
ugly:
The bad
and ugly:
Heater core needs replaced. Heater hasn’t worked in years. Don’t need it in Arizona.
Sunroof works, but the rubber seal is going
out.
Cruise control doesn’t work.
Numerous dents and dings, minor surface rust, etc. See pictures. I
suppose 2 or 3 thousand dollars would take care of the body and paint. A relatively minor expense after everything
else I’ve spent on it.
Anti-lock brakes are inoperative and disconnected. You cannot make them work again without swapping out the front axle, or at least the hubs.
Probably some more things I can’t think of at
the moment. Interior is in good shape
though.
Comes with roof rack, spare tire, some spare
parts, etc. . Note the pictures with the
roof rack are a couple years old. I
usually don’t have it on and the Jeep has more scratches and dings since then.
Now for the good stuff:
A LOT of time, money and effort has gone into this thing over the years. I cannot possibly list it all. (So many things like the fact that the rear differential cover bolts have been drilled out and studs inserted to make it stronger). But I'll give it a shot.
Suspension/lift
kit
Rock Krawler 8-in lift kit. This was an early kit, yes they did once make an 8-inch lift for the
ZJ. One of the features of this kit is
the extremely tall and soft springs. Also the solid Chromoly control arms. They are small in diameter compared to others but they are solid and not
hollow. The upper control arms have
high-misalignment joints, the bottom ones are Currie Johnny Joints.

Engine/Under
hood:
Entire
engine was professionally and completely rebuilt and blueprinted at about 81, , 000 miles in 2008.. I tried to use genuine Mopar performance
parts as far as possible. A very
expensive proposition. The whole process
took about 9 months. I have a receipt
for over $6, 000 plus I provided another
4-5 thousand in parts. My total cost of
the engine build alone was over $12, 000. I have a list of some of the part
numbers but a computer hard drive crash
wiped it out. Geez….where do I start? How about top down.
Holley 52 throttle body
Mopar M1 Intake manifold
Mopar aluminum heads with:
Mopar
Performance HD valve springs and retainers
Mopar
Performance roller rocker arms
Mopar
Performance valves
Mopar R/T purple camshaft
Mopar Performance roller lifters
Mopar Performance HD pushrods
Mopar Performance double roller timing chain
Mopar Performance high-volume oil pump
Mopar Performance headers (specifically for the 5.9) custom ceramic coated.
Mopar Performance head, intake manifold, rod and bearing
caps bolts.
Mopar Performance master rebuild kit.
3-Inch exhaust with Magnaflow stainless steel muffler and
high-flow cat.
“Kolak” ignition set….which is basically a set of wires, colder spark plugs, and a high-output coil.
New Mopar distributor (the old one was shot)
Custom high performance computer flash
I have also since replaced nearly everything else under the
hood.
New power steering pump
New power steering gear box
New starter
New alternator – 130 amp. This was my third or 4th one. The high output ones kept quitting. This one works at least.
Hoses, pulleys, tensioners, etc. ….all replaced at one time
or another
About the only things under the hood that have not been
rebuilt or replaced are the power brake booster and A/C compressor. It’s amazing to me the A/C compressor still
works…but it does.
Cooling
system:
I could write a book about this….my 5+ year quest to get
this beast to run cool. But current set
up is:
Custom built Ron Davis Racing aluminum radiator. It is an inch thicker than stock, about
twice the fin count(or more), and it’s been modified to a double pass.
Flow cooler high volume water pump
Ford Mark VIII fan (new, not used).
Dual high-output relays to control it (since they keep
burning out)
Various other modifications, too many to list or mention.
I built this thing to run in the southwest deserts and you can drive it around all day long off-road in 110 degree heat with the A/C on. Not many 5.9s can do that. On the other hand it doesn't handle cold weather very well. The few times I've had it in the high country in below freezing weather the engine stays about 150 degrees. .even with the fan off. .and the transmission temp doesn't even move.
