A bit of history
In 2008 I purchased a '95 Diablo with 24K miles on it from a private seller that had spend approximately 50K toward several Lamborghini dealers to solve a check engine light issue. The car ran fine and it was my chance to own my dream car so I thought I'd give it a try since the price was reasonable. After the purchase I also tried taking taking it to the dealer for the check engine light issue but their computer/scanner was not working. I was told they were not going to purchase a new one since the price was around 20K. I began to think...good thing I have gauges and the car runs awesome, hopefully I won't ever break down and have to be towed to the dealer. I later began to realize that I live 50 miles from Las Vegas and if I were to use the Diablo for a run to town it would eventually increase mileage therefore decrease in value rapidly. I was also noticing that parts were increasing and some becoming unavailable which was another concern. I know...maybe I should have picked a different car other then an exotic but I thought it didn't seem fair to spend this kind of money to get such a poor return in happiness and I surely didn't want just a garage queen...hmmm what to do?
I found another '95 Diablo that was fire damaged in the rear, the rear body panels had been damaged but someone had already reconstructed the quarters and bumper out of fiberglass, it all fits as the original. The complete drive train was missing, no wiring in the rear, no cooling system, the 2 computers were missing along with a lot of interior pieces. I sold the first Diablo and got to work, can you imagine replacing everything with even used oem equipment, it would have cost way more then the vehicle is worth so I chose something simple, easy to work on myself or any dealer for that matter and parts are always readily available without the price inflation, on the bonus side the car would have more power and better fuel economy.
I chose a new built Corvette LS3 motor with a Porsche 911 (G50) transaxle. The motor was purchase through Don Hardy Race Cars and the transaxle through Renegade Hybrids. The only mod to the motor is a mid grade Crane cam, the transaxle on the other hand has had limited slip, billet side shift with cable shifting, billet end plate (making it shorter) and a taller 5th gear added. The starter is a Bosch 911 starter (can be replaced in under 5 minutes). Axles were custom made, rear shocks were never there so they were replaced by Romic (coil overs) the front are still Koni. The cooing fans are custom aluminum built by PWR to fit the factory location/mounts. Now the car has one Delphi computer (OBD2 with port..very important), 1 fuel pump, all GM accessories such as the power steering pump, alternator, and a/c compressor. I do have a spare computer and fuel pump that goes with the car...just in case.
If you ask why this drive train set up instead of a different V12 or Viper V10? It's because this package fit into the car without heavily modifying the frame. The axles had to pass through the frame just right, as there is not much room without cutting the frame. If I were to hack up the frame to much I might as well of built a kit car. I had to make sure the car still remained stable as originally intended. I built the exhaust system to exit the center of the grill...also custom made. The oem exhaust tips always reminded me of the old vw beetles so had to change that. A lot of people gave me their opinion on the exhaust sound and they love it. It only has 2 Borla mufflers so it is quit loud...in a good way. The brakes system is still the factory brembos.
Although I was missing a lot of interior parts I searched for anything used I could but had to buy many little pieces from Lamborghini because for me the interior had to be original for the most part. I purchased imported leather from Italy and real alcantara from Gulf Fabrics, the orange thread for stitching was purchased from Ammon so it's one of the best. I didn't trust upholstery shops to order because I didn't want cheap material so I ordered it myself for the upholster. During the upholstery I also added heated seats and a couple of cup holders...I know...but I really like those two amenities. It's pre wired wired for cruise control but never got that far...yet. I did manage to luck out and buy a pair of roadster seats with the adjustable lumbar, another likeable feature.
I do enjoy a nice sound system at times and the stock Diablo ones were lacking in that dept for today's standards so I added a nice Pioneer 80prs head unit, a pair of 6.5 inch Hertz Milli separates and 2 JL 10 inch subs powered by a Audison Voce all running active crossovers...it's much better!
After completing the car I drove from Nevada through the Colorado mountains, everything worked as planned with no issues, I did notice alot of rock chips on the front bumper and the lower lip of the bumper was scrapped a bit. When I returned I pulled the bumper, repainted it and built a matching fiberglass lip for protection. It can be removed with 7 bolts instead of removing the entire bumper for and future repair. I also added a clear bra. The windshield was new during the build and the first thing was to add clear plex on top of that for rock chip prevention. .best investment yet Diablo owners, windshield replacement is a pain on these cars.
To sum it up, the car is now lighter (3200Ibs) more powerful 550 hp (477 rw hp494ft Ibs torque on dyno) shorter shifting ratio's (better for in town driving), and better MPG (best was 23.8), It is road trip worthy, no worry to put miles on, no expensive services, and can be worked on anywhere you choose. I purchased the car without a title but retained a bonded title that has been clear for many years now so it has a clear Nevada title. It has been a joy to drive and the most comfortable out of all my vehicles but after building it for the last 8 years I feel like my desire has been met and would like to use the money for other financial obligations. I'm not in a rush or have to sell but thought I'd put it out there to see how is goes. I have come across a lot of people that like what has been created bringing this car back to life instead of sitting in some salvage yard.. So many people appreciate these iconic cars that they need not be tucked away in a garage or warehouse. I've had people tell me you really made my day, it's not me making their day. .it's the car, they didn't care what motor it has . The car comes with no warranty but I don't foresee any issues.
