Land Rover Defender (1997)
for sale

Price: US $15,100.00

Description:

I am the 2nd owner of this Defender, and it is my personal vehicle. I love this truck and it is super fun to drive, the only reason I'm selling is its time to get a teen driver a car so I need to sell my toy.
The Defender is one of the most iconic vehicles on the road, and it can trace its lineage directly to the first Land Rover in 1948. The Defender was officially sold in the USA by Land Rover for only 4 model years. The 1997 model Defender is the last year, and is the only year to have the 4.0 liter V8 and automatic transmission from the factory. Land Rover didn't sell Defenders in the US after 1997 because starting in 1998 they would have had to meet new US standards which would have required a complete re-design of the vehicle. Land Rover continued to produce them for overseas markets until January of 2016, when all production ceased. I was fortunate enough to take a factory tour last September before they closed. I got to observe for myself the production line. These trucks are all hand-built, sometimes with multiple generations of the same family working on the assembly line together. These trucks are truly built by craftsman. All other mass-produced vehicles today are mostly assembled by robots.
The Defender definitely has a 'coolness' factor about it. I have owned many very nice vehicles in the past, including other Land Rovers, Sports Cars, Muscle Cars, Trucks... The Defender generates more interest and 'thumbs-up' than all the other vehs combined. One of the many things I really love about the Defender is that it's prestigious without being pretentious. It is unique in that it is equally at home pulling up at the hunting camp and the country club, and you have 'street-cred' at either location!
This vehicle was in very good condition when I got it, but I have tinkered with small things... I think I have an OCD desire to 'make things perfect'. I replaced the turn signal, tail light, reverse light lenses so they are all bright and brand new. I didn't change them to LED as I am a purist and wanted to keep it all original. I had the front windshield & seal replaced, and also replaced the seals on the rear sliding windows, so now no more of the typical window rattle as you go down the road. I sent the original factory Land Rover radio out and had it refurbished. The radio works great but the cassette player doesn't work and I didn't have that fixed. I also replaced the speakers with OE looking ones. I didn't want any hoopty looking stereo equipment, with gaudy speaker covers and big booming bass. I did add an input where you can plug in an iPod or phone, mostly so the kids can listen to their music. I prefer the regular radio. I replaced all the shocks and the steering stabilizer shock. I replaced the steering wheel with an original leather-wrapped Land Rover wheel. I have had much more maintenance done, but I don't have the service records with me now...I do have all the records from my ownership, will add these later.
The truck has 170, 000 miles on it but drives like a 70, 000 mile vehicle. Tight, crisp, with no squeaks or rattles. I have taken it on many highway trips of a couple hours away from home (one-way...4 hours round trip). It drives great on the highway, easily cruising with traffic at 75 mph or more if you need it. I think the seats are very comfortable, and it is a very nice way to travel, with the windows down and your arm resting on the window sill, sitting up high with a clear view of the road. Definitely a pleasure to drive, either in town or on the highway.
