1988 Land Rover Defender 110 Turbo Diesel station wagen. http://www, yrm-metal-solutions.co.uk/WebRoot/BT4/Shops/BT4822/5612/928D/3cbd/20FE/1DDF/0A0C/05B9/566F/YRM048b_1_ml.jpg
This is a great opportunity to get a Defender 110 Turbo Diesel that is already stateside, legal, and registered. These trucks get harder and harder to comeby at reasonable prices each year. This is a good example, is the perfect camping / adventuremobile...or you can drive it as-is reliably as a daily driver. Everyone has their own ideas of what they need in a rig and that's why we are letting this one go unrestored. In short, this great example is entirely up to you to personalize and build as you see fit. (We will gladly lend a hand of course)
100% legally imported and registered in the State of Virginia. Truck gets a lot of attention and people always have a talk when i get out of it.
For a 28 year old vehicle it is in average shape. It suffers from the standard Defender issues that come with a vehicle of this age.
A land rover reality check: “The Bad and reality”
—>Frame requires a few patches left and right. Yes i inspected it with a boroscope and this is why i bought the vehicle for restoration well over a year ago. All trucks this age will have these issues, and we do not paint chassis to hide these things from folks. Yes, i can get it repaired for you, but expect the cost too be between $800 and $1200.
—>As with any original or “so called freshly painted land rover’s, rust areas such as the door bottoms and bulkhead are inevitable. If you are a good welder, then certainly fixing the doors will be an enjoyable experience, if not, it is a nightmare. We do have a set of new doors and will gladly sell them too you and/or install them free of charge.
—>The bulkhead, is in poor shape, and will need extensive welding and various new panels. See the “good section” below.
—> Paint leaves much to be desired, and i recommend you strip it and have it repainted. This way you know the bones with which you are working rather than buying a “freshly painted truck” which in our experience always hides $$$ in the form of tons of rust.
A land rover reality check: “The Good and the goodies”
—> This truck actually has only 99K miles. This is verifiable with old paperwork that we received with the vehicle. This really is quite low mileage for one of these, as many you see have over 200k miles and or no documentation.
—> Upgraded Discovery 2 leather heated front seats and rear bench which folds entire forward, giving you more space and significantly more comfort than the miserable very very old and tired defender seats will give you. $1300 upgrade. You will have to finish the front seat installation part, as this is quite custom to personal preference due to the added heigh and relation to the steering wheel. clearance that is personally desired. I will of course gladly figure this out with you. The seats are currently not wired, and that will be a project for you, but all the switches and necessaries are there.
—> We are giving you a brand new spring set front and rear, including the turrets. This needs to be replaced on this car. High quality terrafirma heavy duty set, which we sell for $499 plus $125 for the turrets.
—> Rear cappings, you are getting brand new ones too replace the old rotten ones. All land rover’s post 1986 will have this issue, and this is often hidden by the cars interiors panelling, and an ugly expense when you decide to properly clean a defender. We sell these usually for $225 a piece. It is an awesome project to undertake and will give you a great appreciation for the vehicles construction.
—> More modern wheels and the old steel wheels and tires are included as well. I will also throw in a 5th rim that will match the rims and tires currently on the truck so that the rim hanging from the rear door is the same as on the rest of the truck.
—> Footwells both sides you will be receiving brand new from expensive high quality items that we get from YRM at a $110.
—> Repair panels for the upper half of the bulkhead which are straightforth and spotwelded in. These sell for $150+ a pair. Side section of the bulkhead, this sells for $75 a piece. Lower section of the bulkhead, this sells for $65 a piece.
—> Brand new front propshaft, $170 item.
—> plus various other smaller tid bits, such as seals, which quickly add up to about $250+.
All in all, everything to get you going and keep you occupied for the first several weeks if not months whilst you work on the car.
If you live locally i will gladly throw in a couple of days of my knowledgeable hands of labor.
The rest:
I have personally driven the vehicle and know how what and where, and will gladly answer any concerns you may have. In my opinion (grew up in the back of a 109 station wagon, rrc and defender restorationist, and owned every ladder chassis landy aside from a forward control) it is, a good truck mechanically, certainly on par to the trucks we usually deal with and repair. As with all trucks this age i do recommend you change all the rubber bushings out, as this is often overlooked by novice sellers.
Fluids have been checked, but they are not serviced. I do recommend you fully service the truck upon taking delivery. Easy truck to work on and i will gladly lend a hand via the phone/skype if you get stuck.
We will also gladly entertain offer’s but negotations will result in us removing some of the above listed items that we included in the auction with the car.
Please remember, this vehicle is now 28 years old and as such has the normal expected wear for it's age due to its originality. Please do not come or bid expecting a showroom 110. If that is what you are looking for you are going to pay 70K+. That being said, it is a great truck that is the perfect starting point for your own adventure lifestyle for years to come.
We do stock quite a bit of parts that can be purchased separately and a price for installation can be negotiated.
As with any auction, we reserve the right to cancel any and all bids, as the car is locally for sale as well.
Go explore and live well.
