1979 Land Rover Series III 109, 4 cylinder diesel, Dutch Army surplus.
I wanted a Land Rover 109 or a 110. As I could not decide which, I purchased one of each, in England, and had them shipped to Texas. Each has endearing and aggrivating features! Ultimately, I prefer my 1985 Defender 110, so I'm selling the 109.
The VIN is LBCAG2AA100118. The odometer reads 17, 502 kilometers, though clearly multiples of 100, 000 need to be added, as it is of 1979 manufacture.
A 4 cylinder 2.25 diesel engine with a 4 speed manual transmission propels her. There is a lever on the bulkhead of the drivers seat that operates an electric overdrive, though I have not been brave enough to engage the warp (over) drive. So, it may or may not work. Spedometer and odometer function. Temperature gauges do not.
I have had all the shocks (Proline) replaced, installed 2 new batteries (she is 24 volt) and had the steering serviced by a local independent Land Rover specialist. I have also replaced the original wheels and tires with newer Wolf wheels and Michelin tires.
Cosmetically I have replaced the driver's back cushion, changed the front plastic grille to a wire grille, added headlight guards and added proper British style turn and parking lights. These lights are not wired in, but at least they replace the ugly rubber plugs. Also included are two long new old stock US Military cushions for cargo area seating.
Included are the plastic front grille and the original canvas soft top. The latter being ugly and faded, but mostly waterproof.
The body is straight, though the paint is faded. There is a small diesel drip from the side engine, which the shop suggested I just live with it. Also the lower pillar forward of the driver's door has rusted through and needs addressing sometime in the future. Clearly a 36 year old vehicle is going to need some level of repairs and restoration.
All in all, the 109 is fun to drive, as is, and a real head turner and babe magnet, provided you like survivalist type women.
